| 1.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 4/20 | Dec 17, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a decent foamy off-white head that actually had some nice retention, finally falling to a thin film. The nose is sweet malt and a bit of a buttery hint that gets stronger the more you smell it. The flavor is quite sweet with some dark caramel and toffee up front, but the butter comes on with a good bit of force on the finish. Between the butter and the sweet malt, there’s not much else going on here. Medium bodied and a bit slick feeling on the palate, the finish lingers on forever. Softer, more gentle carbonation than the other Berghoff beers I’m having tonight. This might be decent if they could get rid of the butter flavor. Narnad (721), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 16, 2009 Sold as their Sundown Dark beer. Pours a dark brown with ruby tones as light shines through with a very quickly disappearing white head that fades to a very thin film. Aroma has some grain husk notes, a very pungent burnt toast smell, mild chocolate and some bitter malt notes to finish. Flavor has an early slight metallic note that fades to a bitter black malt presence, mild caramel, burnt toast and finishes with a sweet malty flavor. Thin body, smooth texture and very high carbonation round out the mouthfeel. Overall the beer has an over whelming aroma of burnt toast in the toaster. Kinda like popcorn flavored jellybeans, not a bad flavor/aroma but when its not in the right place with the right texture, its just wrong. demitriustown (703), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Dec 14, 2009 12 oz bottle: Aroma is dark malt, roasty, woody, light chocolate and coffee notes. Appearance is a semi-cloudy brownish black with a small tan head that diminishes quickly. Taste is metallic, coffee, malt chocolate, and a but of some off funky flavors. Palate has a well carbonated mouthfell but finishes off. Overall, Average scent and Appearance taste and palate are off. Cheers! dwaggs2 (562), Lee’s Summit, Missouri, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Bottle. Poured an amber color with a little white head. Aroma was very malty. Some bitter hops, and yeast. Flavor was weaker. Some mild bitters, chocolate, and bread. Thin body, some carbonation. Very smooth on the palate. Just a so so beer. beercamel (84), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 1.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 1/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Oct 18, 2009 pours weak clear brown and the taste just lacks and is bland, but not horrible. This is drinkable a good beer for nuts. MadIndian (997), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 16, 2009 Gift from my Wisconsin hook up. Thanks Jamie. Reddish brown pour with thin white head. Yeast and chocolate malt aroma. Same in taste with medium body and sweet finish. Not bad. ChainGangGuy (2613), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Sep 11, 2009 Appearance: Pours up a clear, brown body with a frothed, ivory-hued head.
Smell: Dismal collection of faint notes: bready malts, apple core, dry caramel, cocoa. It’s disappointing.
Taste: Initially taste of bready barley with a faint caramel sweetness and dash of clearance bin cocoa. Hint of apple fruitiness. Dash of spicy hops but almost nil in the bitterness department. Dry, indistinct maltiness on the thin finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-low carbonation.
Drinkability: A sad, sad underperforming brown ale, but, unfortunately, I would say that about pretty much their entire line-up. Not recommended. unclemattie (2438), Georgia, USA
