williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Nov 8, 2009 In front of light it’s cherry red; in the shadows it’s nut brown. Big foam-rubber head.
Combination of mild mocha and leathery notes. Hint of tobacco. Roasted malts with that smoky kind of aroma. Complex and wonderfully dark.
Heavy, toasted malts with smoky tobacco flavors. Earthy, muddy flavor (a good thing). Roasted malts are understated, not fetishized or extreme.
The feels is not that of a choker but thick and full-bodied. This is really a fine porter; full of dark flavors, but not a black hole. Really pleasant and delicious.
SuIIy (1405), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA Oct 29, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a creamy off white head. Nose is mocha and metallic with a light coffee note. Palate is smooth with a light metallic tinge. Flavor is light coffee with a hint of chocolate malt and a light hop note. mjs (1445), Helsinki, Finland Oct 28, 2009 (Cask) Poured almost black with tan coloured and long lasting medium sized head. Aroma was of quite burnt malts and sweet liquorice. Body was full with low carbonation. It tasted of roastedness, liquorice, lightly ash, bitterness and sea water. Aftertaste contained burnt malts and bitterness. Very good one. daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2009 Dark brown pour, tan head. Roasty aroma with lots of chocolate and hints of coffee. Flavor is a bit sweet with a good dose of chocolate. this is a well crafted porter. Very nice. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Oct 22, 2009 Bottle thanks to Cletus. Thanks, John! Pours lovely dark brown with slow-forming beige head. Decent lacing throughout. Nose of roasty chocolate malts. Some hop presence and creaminess. A little thin on the palate and finish, but very drinkable. Actually, palate reveals nice mild carbonation... light but lively. Solid if somewhat standard porter. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 13, 2009 22 oz. bottle - thanks to RCl for the trade; dark brown pour with off-white head settling quickly; aromas primarily a bitter/sweet mix of baker’s chocolate and roasted malt; mocha, caramel, nutty flavors; mildly creaming body is above average for a porter and it finishes with a dry sweetness; very solid, but a shade below their coffeehouse porter Holdwine (904), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Aug 16, 2009 Graet porter in a big bottle. Only complaint-maybe too much hopping. Other than that, a big winner. Nicely sweet and chocolaty (?). Maybe even some dark fruits. Yum. DJMonarch (5966), Northwich, Cheshire, England Aug 9, 2009 Cask Stillage at the GBBF Earl’s Court, London 08/08/2008
Fruit and hop aromas. Dark coloured and strong in alcohol with a little bitterness and dryness in a crisp roast finish.
