Nice aroma of roasts, dark chocolate, and coffee. Palate is smooth, but thinner than I expected, with soft carbonation. Flavor is a creamy blend of coffee, malt, a touch of vanilla, and dark chocolate. Finishes fairly short, but a tasty mixture of sweetness, creamy chocolate, roasts, and a smidgen of alcohol. A great gateway impy stout. Derek881 (502), Frederick, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 2, 2008 Sampled from the bottle while in MA. The beer had a nice roasty malt aroma with tones of chocolate and coffee, and a bit of earthy hops too. A darker brown-black color with a smallish dark tan head that had decent cling and some retention. Pretty good sweet malty flavors, with some of the aromas being represented, and a touch of bitterness too. A thicker, creamy and full mouthfeel, with a lot of cling and lower carbonation. Definitely a good beer, and a well-contained high level of alcohol. BrotherGrendel (611), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 23, 2008 Appearance is a clear dark brown hue, thick dense brown foamy bubbles mostly sustains, fair lacing sticks to the glass.
Smell is a range of sweet malts (coffee/chocolate/roast), slight molasses and bittering hops, subtle alcohol.
Taste is subtle milk chocolate, followed up by roast and coffee malts, slight grassy/earthy hops in the middle, hints of dark fruits and molasses/brown sugar, finish is bittersweet.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick and chewy texture, mild carbonation.
Drinkability is moderate, well-balanced RIS that is solid but not showy in any way, nice malt profile is consistent throughout the drink, alcohol is muted at 8.5%, another nice ale from BBC, well worth trying but nothing too stellar here. maugus4ever (123), Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA

Has great chocolate, coffee, and malt aroma. Nice complex flavors go great together, and I even tasted a bit of bourbon in the mix. This is a great beer. railcat1 (582), Orlando, Florida, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2008 Pours pitch black with a beautiful caramel/tan 1/8 inch head. Heavy, heavy sweet sticky lacing clings tightly. Smell is surprisingly faint. Smells of bourbon, roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. First taste is very creamy with the bourbon flavor leading the way with deep rich malts, coffee and chocolate mixing together. A nice strong bitterness follows….again very creamy. Not as big a body as DL, KTG, or Abyss, but still a very nice backbone. This is very good! Rciesla (3910), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 26, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown beer and a thinner tan head. The flavors are of chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, and caramel. The beer is sweet creamy but overall seems bit watered down, maybe some more etoh would one up this one. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA

Black pour with good ivory beige head. Sweet toffee malt smell. Flavor was sweet and slightly drying. Mouthfeel was nice - a smooth and yet light body. Overall, quite drinkable.
