The more I quaff, the more I smell an ash-tray like aroma. Weird. Transparent orange/copper color with an off-white head. Does not appear to be unfiltered. Toffee caramel-like sweetness to start, turning very mildly roasty to finish. I also get some floral flavors...maybe some heather? This is a unique beer to my palate that is for the most part, bland. This is an unassertive beer that doesn’t really seem to fit into a category. Perhaps putting it in the "Ale" category would be more appropriate than in with the Brown Ales? | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Sep 25, 2005 Bottle. Brown, apple-cider looking and hazy, with a thin tan head. Very fruity aroma, with malt and a slight hop note. Fruity malty flavors. Hint of alcohol. Low hop bitterness. Slight carmel, malty finish. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 15, 2005 Pours a cloudy brown body with a nice sized head. Aroma is wonderful. Fruity, nutty, roasty, raisins, etc. Unfortunately, the flavor can’t match the aroma. It’s mostly fruity with caramel that finishes bittersweet. The complexity just disappeared. I thought for a minute I was going to be drinking a world classic instead of some random microbrew. Oh well, it’s still good. CamdenD (617), Madrid, Spain
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 29, 2005 This is a very refreshing brown ale. It’s gorgeous looking, a deep mahogany red-brown, not a normal brown ale look. This beer is crisp yet malty. Very well balanced -- a bit of a stale aftertaste... and notes of alcohol bounce. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 17, 2005 Strong English, woodsy malt component, a good bit sweet and, well, earthy and leathery. Nutty, yes. Served from a 22 oz bottle, and surprisingly unfiltered. Good. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 3, 2005 22oz bottle: poured brownish orange with a medium tan head. Mild sweet malt aroma with a hint of fruit. Sweet malty flavor with just a smidgen of hops. Lightly nutty. Easy, smooth drinking. I like it. Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 22, 2005 22oz bottle. Pours brown with a small tan head. Smells fruity with some raisin and nut notes. Taste is on the sweeter and of the malt scale with caramel and brown sugar overwhelming the senses. Slightly nutty finish. PhatB420 (137), Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 18, 2004 Just a little sweet, just enough to keep me tasting this very very medium ale. I was expected an avalanche of flavor when i explored this, but was left alone there. Other than that I enjoyed being with the river.
