hayduke (1620), Eureka, California, USA Aug 11, 2009 At a friends house in Feeding Hills, MA this poured a dark ice tea color with a medium sized off-white head and light lacing. Nose of roasted malts with coffee, chocolate, and some floral hops. Creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is dominated by the roasted malts. Easy drinking and enjoyable. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 3, 2009 The look is a dark Coca-Cola brown/black. Head? We hardly knew ye; disappears almost as soon as it shows up. It’s darker at the top than at the bottom. Lighter brown down below. The smell is a mild coffee, but with a lagery base. It’s like a mild stout (obviously, right?). Major burnt malt, though. The taste is roasted, but also smooth. It’s almost to the point of burnt. It has a smoky flavor (goes well with beef jerky). Typically, it is a roasted-malt stout tempered by a not-bad lager. The feel is more lagery than portery/stouty. It’s creamy but not super-thick. The taste is good but a little slight. Doesn’t quite commit to either side, and though it’s fine, it feels like it skimped out a tad. alobar (1006), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 6, 2009 Dark brown with reddish tints. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts, and coffee. Flavor of roasted malts, caramel and some hops bitterness. Too thin for a porter, but decent flavor. rocbyter (902), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Jun 11, 2009 Sweet fruity malt aroma. Clear red color with a small white head. Sweet malt throughout. altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Feb 26, 2009 In Northfield, MA. Dark brown body with healthy head. Nose of malts and sugar. Sweet caramel and toffee flavour. Watery. Smooth and goes down well. RCL (1443), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Feb 24, 2009 More black than tan appearance. Sweet aroma, slightly treacly. Rich, sweet flavor. Significantly sweeter than either their ale or porter. Pretty tasty, though. thornecb (1736), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Jan 11, 2009 Pours dark mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head recedes leaving no lacing. Dark caramel malt aromas. Crisp dark caramel with slight chocolate upfront. Mild hop finish. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Dec 22, 2008 Pours mostly clear dark chestnut brown with three fingers of frothy tan head. Head recedes to a lasting frothy cap. Looks like a brown ale. Light aroma of chocolate along with a nutty brown-sugariness. Lots of foamy sheets and rings of lacing similar to the Berkshire Ale I had last night. Flavor is a nutty brown-sugariness along with light chocolate. As it warms there is a bit of licorice towards finish. Light hoppy bitter bite overlays and provides a light pinch in finish. Pretty tasty. This comes off more like a brown ale than a porter. 22 oz. bottle from Rum Runner.
