Bottle, purchased at an Off-license in Berlin, Germany
Anyone planning an overseas trip do not exclude Germany, beautiful and complex to describe, equally don’t pass off Berlin. Diverse, new, old, vibrant and full of life and the beer is CHEAP! Where in Europe is a pint 58 Euro cents. Thats why I liked this beer. It was a fuel to aid me in this city, much needed. But I must now rate it as beer and not that cheap, bottled Doppel bock I tasted in New Berlin. Poured a deep, deep ruby brown bordering black. Highly charged, it managed a wickedly creamy, thick, tannish head that retained well and legged it down the glass. Rusty, oxidised and bloody, slightly dank strong melanoiden nose that yielded the alcohol well but didn’t exactly entice. Its thin but shows some very rich malts on the palate. Fresh baked bread, sticky date pudding and a prominent showing of blood and rust oxidised malts (?) on the swallow. A little smoke shows as it warms. Nice, simple, malty, warming finish. Its quite fizzy and a little harsh malt-wise overall. Unrefined. Average!!! (50cL, BBE 01/07)

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a handsome, clear mahogany brown with a warm, reddish hue. Off-white head. Sweet aroma of roasted malt. Solid and full body with a shipload of sweetish, roasted malt and some molasses accents. This is almost fluid candy. Very subdued bitterness. A classical Doppelbocvk. 070706

500 ml bottle, bought at KaDeWe, Berlin. Dark reddish brown colour, large tan head. Pleasant roasty and malty sweet aroma, notes of dark chocolate, prunes and leather. Lightly roasty and malty flavour, hints of chocolate, pumpernickel bread and mild coffee. A pleasant and easy-drinking bock.

(bottle) Clear dark reddish brown colour with a short beige foam. Not very pronounced sweet dark malty, slightly toasted aroma with caramel. Sweet malty flavour and taste, medium to full bodied, ok carbonated; medium dry sweetbitter toastmalty and quite short finish. Not overly exciting but pretty drinkable Bock.

More of a traditional Bock than a doppel. Nice and clean, but lacks the malty character of a good bock. Nice crisp beer to drink and enjoy, but not to the caliber of a doppelbock.

On draught (Zapfhahn, Berlin Ostbahnhof): Amber coloured, off-white to brownish head; sweet-malty nose with a stronger alcoholic touch, a bit brandy-like, traces of toasted malt in the aroma; sweet-malty flavour, medium bodied; becomes dryer towards the end, alcohol-burn again, faint bitterness in the aftertaste. Too alcoholic, not very well balanced or rounded.................
