KingPinHead (390), Des Moines, Washington, USA Apr 10, 2003 Nose is coffee, cocoa, on the light side...Color is brown/black with medium beige head and ribbon lace...Flavor is a nice blend of roasted malts (coffee and chocolate) and well-bittered hops. I think the malts are toned down just a bit to allow the hops to assert themselves more fully. They certainly work well in concert. The finish has a mild tang to it (maybe the honey at work). Body is definitely light for an imperial, and I am a bit disappointed in this respect; the overall intensity one expects of this style isn't quite here either. But I am definitely not disappointed in the superb balance of this brew. In sum, I might characterize this as something of a "light" imperial stout. It lacks the weight and punch of the genuine article, but what it lacks in massive attack it compensates for with excellent flavor and balance. Taken on its own merits, this is a very satisfying offering...most enjoyable.
NobleSquirrel (758), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 30, 2008 I’ve had this one for a coupld of years, definitely a weak IS, Load of chocolate flavor, deep brown yeah that goes away. Body is kind of thin, though. It’s alright Ughsmash (3148), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 18, 2008 Many, many thanks to Jeff for digging deep to find this for me! This looks to be an older vintage with a red label (if anyone knows when this might have been brewed, please let me know). Poured a clear, medium-viscosity deep brown with just a few large, loose bubbles of head around the edges. The aroma showed some degredation, but it evolved in a very enjoyable way.. sweeter chocolates, molasses, caramel, and honey accented by drier, dusty herbal notes. The flavor was very sweet with drawn caramel and chocolate at the forefront.. honey, cola, and light coffee round it out on the back half.. sticky and pleasant, but this is where the lighter gravity and age affected it the most. A tad shy of medium-bodied, sweet, and sticky on the palate.. very little carbonation remained. This held up surprisingly well. RSRIZZO (1078), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Dec 2, 2007 Had this beer on 1/8/1998. The color is a deep black, aroma has a sweet malt smell with back tones of coffee. There is little head and carbonation is low. Taste is fair, down fall is that the body is too light. It starts off light and bubbly then goes down with a sharp bitter taste. It doesn’t live up to what the lable clames it to be and is not one of the better stouts I’ve had. kp (6300), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Date: 07/02/1996
black, whispy head, much milder than the old stuff, no real apparent esters, lots of roasted flavor, just a slight bit of sweet esters in the aroma, sweet finish, lasting tan head with nice lace
alexsdad06 (688), Ohio, USA Mar 22, 2007 Bottle. Found in cellar. I’m not sure how long its been there. Pours dark with a fleeting tan head. Aroma contains coffee and chocolate. The taste of coffee, roasted malts and some chocolate is interrupted by the alcohol i picked up. I have had impys with double the alcohol content not taste as much. Not as viscous as I would like to see either. Very average.
