Commercial Description:
A strong, sweet and very full-bodied ale, with malt and roasted malt flavors predominating. This dark red colored ale is a house favorite among our specialty beers.

Sample from growler at the Ratebeer Mondial gathering, chateau de tiggmtl. Dark maple-walnut color, near-opaque, hint of foamy ring and mere touch of lace...smoky charcoal, caramel, burnt sugar in the substantial nose, lovely example of style...body doesn’t hold to the standard set in the aroma though, rather watery, some nice caramel malts and chocolate and vanilla lend it a decent flavor profile, but ultimately it doesn’t measure up.

Caramel, toffee, candy-like sweetness and perhaps a whiff of smoke in the aroma. Opaque brown body with amber highlights is topped by a low, off-white head that diminishes to partial cover and ring. Chocolate, plums, caramel and toffee flavours up front are chased by a roasty bitterness. Some odd spiciness in the finish. Medium body feels syrupy due to low carbonation at first but follows through to a dry, roasty finish. Growler sampled at the Ratebeer Mondial Gathering 2005.

Échantillon servi d’un growler, Juin 2005. Couleur brune noisette, mousse beige pleinement diminuante.

2005 growler at the Mondial Ratebeer tasting, 6/4/05. Dark violet-auburn-brown with some amber tinges on the sides. No head, no lacing. Some caramel and toffee in the nose, with light hints of dry chocolate. Flavor is lightly vinous, with a very earthy yeast and rich barley tone to it. Caramel malts and bitter roasted malts. Cherries, plums and prunes on the finish, which is lightly bitter. Chocolate lingers, though there is some wateriness to it. Low carbonation is pleasant. Enjoyable, but the depth of flavor could be better and the malts seems a little unwieldly, the bitter roast and dry chocolate at odds with the only light caramel/toffee. Too much acidic astringency. A strange one, perhaps it would do much better fresh on draught or bottled.

Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin offwhite head. Interesting aroma of smoked malt, caramel and alcohol. The flavor is the same, smoked malt, caramel, alcohol. Liquorous texture. Very interesting, thanks Erica !

A gift from my friend Erica during her 2005 Mondial visit, this was our modest contribution to TiggMTL’s post-mondial tasting

Dark crimson, almost sanguine, with a slick ring of lacing. Smoked with hickory chips and peaty, with a side of chocolate. Very nice aroma. Smooth carbonation, rich caramel malts and woodsy, smoldering spices gives this Beer great carnal character. It made me feel like painting my face blue, lift my kilt and moon some Englishmen!
