Commercial Description:
Made in the tradition of artisan brewers, Sans Culottes is a blonde beer sur lie. Probably the best bière de garde for the uninitiated to start with. Packed in a 75 cls bottle with a wired-down cork, Sans Culottes sports a brilliantly eye-catching label showing a revolutionary soldier proudly wearing his pantalons, having wisely forsaken his culottes for the coming struggle.

Of all places I had this at Bottlescrew Bill’s here in Calgary and it wasn’t available in the local liquor stores to my memory. Light effervescent and amazing. Page 270 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 344 out of his 500 Classic Brews to go.

Pours a deep gold color, sweet, yeasty, pilsner malt fragrances, creamy bubbles on top, lots of lacing, sweet fruitiness, bread, medium sweet pilsner taste, some hops, little sour on the tongue, faint citrus, wood and some bread taste, I was expecting a more complex brew.

Bottle, Pours a dark golden color, with a large tight white head. Dark malt taste, but in now way sweet it finishes quite dry. Light amount of hops, Quite good my first in the style, really not what I expected, which was nice not too yeasty and rich without being sweet i really enjoyed it.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with an average off-white lasting head, fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, straw, meal), average hops (grass), average yeast (dough, leaves) with notes of apple, wine and cask. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness.

Pours a clear straw color with a one inch head that settles pretty slowly to a thin cap and ring, and leaves behind some pretty nice lacing. Smell; very earthy, with a somewhat horse blanket smell. Fruity with hints of apples with some bits of coriander. Taste; the horse blanket is more pronounced in the flavor. There’s a nice grassy and fruitiness, with some apples and coriander and a little bit of lemon. Mouthfeel is light and pretty creamy, and goes down really nicely. Went very well with my spicy Thai chicken.

Pours a hazy gold. A frothy three inch head of acid white foam dies quickly to just a fizy film. No lacing. Slightly tart aroma - a little malt and a hint of sharp funk. Dry toasted malt competes with a slightly grapey fruit flavor. These are followed by lots of lemon. Dust, apple, and metal dominate the finish. Almost medium body, very lively carbonation

Bottle, Dodgy Deli, Oxford. Slightly hazy gold with a big parchment-white later of head. Mineral, earthy aroma, spicy and dry. Medicinal, with a mildly funky dry finish. A bit of lingering tartness, and a touch of warmth. Light palate, bright carbonation. Some of the buttery character that seems fairly common in La Choulette beers. Initially very mild, but building as the glass progresses. Becomes a little distracting after awhile. Still, a decent beer, though the flavor doesn’t quite live up to the aroma.

750. Been tasting yucky Christmas beers all night, this is a an oasis. Beer is clear, light-medium hued copper. Head is initially large, frothy, white. Diminishing but lasting.
Aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain; Hoppy with a trace notes of lemon zest, moderate sweet grass and honeysuckle, brewed mellow tea; Yeasty with a trace of attic;Trace note of green apple peel.
The flavor is moderately-to-heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter with an average-length, lightly warm, lightly sweet finish.
The body is medium, the texture is creamy smooth and the carbonation is lively.
Simple and lovely.
