| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 29, 2008 341 ml bottle from Marche Jovi, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: A beautiful shade of copper, clear, with a slightly orange tan head.
Aroma: Big chewy sweet malts – tons of caramel and fruits, minty herbals, huge brown sugar, raisins, figs, dried apricots, a bit nutty, a fair hit of grapefruit hops, wood, big, spicy and intense.
Palate: Medium-ish body, soft but full carbonation (big bubbles).
Flav.: Stern hops, black pepper, still enough fruit, more burnt sugar than caramel, slightly soy sauce, a bit of alcohol; off-dry with fair bitterness and a lingering burnt sugar note and light roasted hazelnuts.
Pretty intense stuff! TaktikMTL (2786), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 4, 2008 341mL bottle from a trade with a friend in Ottawa. My second only ever Altbier (LAME LCBO/Beer Store). Pours a very nice looking, hazy dark amber with a large beige head. Aroma is very interesting, darker malt profile with some nice hop presence, similar to a lot of Quebec beers, with some dryness, spice character (black pepper), a touch of anise, and some sourness. Pretty complex actually. Wow, taste is interesting. You get hit with this weird dry spicyness upfront, very powerful, making way for some minor waves of dark caramalized malty sweetness. A subtle hint of the alcohol is also present throughout, but is quite the shy character. Maybe a touch of yeast as well. This is definitely one very interesting, complex, and perhaps unique beer. Fuller mouth-feel. Boring shades of a dopplebock here, and it worked out well. This is quite a beer. The spices are what really surprised me. Similar in that respect to Dieu du Ciel Route d’Espices. As it warms a touch of sourness becomes more apparent, and it gets more and more Earthy. What a beer, I could write a book about this one!
