Sharpish vegetable smell, as (sweetwater) algae; coloured malts and lots of it. Toasted, crumbly hard bread or crisps in the end. Just a whiff of hops, and charcoal. Very outspoken taste of coloured and roasted malts, stout-ish without being it - roasted barley. In a second helping, an explosion of resiny hops, I find little or no citrus here. There is a touch of saltiness hidden, however. Sligthly oily texture, very remarkable. No carbonation, but doesn’t feel dead. Bit strange for an old ale. To me, more a cross between an APA and a dry stout. Which is perfect with me.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 27, 2005 Dark amber colour, slight haze. The aroma is mainly caramelly with a yeast backdrop and orangey hop notes. The flavour is woody and whole wheat bready with a big astringent bitterness, faint citrusy notes like kaffir limes. Honestly, a bit too astringent for my liking. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Dec 24, 2005 Pungent, earthy, fresh tobacco and citrus hop nose has a very herbal, almost potlike resinous character. Clear copper coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, meringue-like, off white head that recedes slowly to a generous cover with some lacing. Intense resiny hops are joined by a chocolate and biscuity malt flavours with moderate finishing bitterness. Fruity esters are subdued while citrus and biscuit flavours last in the finish. Medium body with lively carbonation but somewhat thin and astringent texture. Tulip glass. Allowed to warm from fridge temperature. Bottle (Rahman, Dec-05). Miguel (1181), Saint-Ours, Quebec, Canada

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2005 The pour reveals a clear brown color with a medium, bubbly tan head. As I stick my nose in the glass the first thing that comes to my mind is earthy and leafy hops, then smoked malt is noticed with caramel sweetness. The flavor is very interesting, the elements described in the aroma are there with citrus added, I like the combination of earthy hops with smoked malt, the flavor finishes bitter. The body is full with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. I like this beer, when I saw the previous rating I thought I would be let down but this is a very good beer to me. I think it helped that I waited for the bottle to warm up after getting it out of the fridge, maybe cold or cool it isn’t as good. rederic (1815), montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 22, 2005 Bright copper color, with a frothy tan head. The nose is one of earthy malts, burnt ashes and smoky notes, peppery spiciness, fruity and caramelized malt, and soft leafy aroma, follows through on a medium-bodied palate, with a grainy malty character, nutty accent, fruity note, with a smoky peaish touch, leading towards a grassy bittering hops finish.
