Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a huge orange head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of over ripe fruits and light notes of metal. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of over ripe fruit and berries, leading to a dry end.

(Bottle 34,1 cl) Courtesy of Siroy. Hazy, amber golden with a tall, dense, off-white head leaving some lacework. Tart, malty nose. Medium body, some fruit and a bitter finish. Not exactly thrilling. 310507

Dark amber colour, slight haze. The aroma is mainly caramelly with a yeast backdrop and orangey hop notes. The flavour is woody and whole wheat bready with a big astringent bitterness, faint citrusy notes like kaffir limes. Honestly, a bit too astringent for my liking.

341ml bottle. This one is that old? Poured a deeper and clear amberish / orange color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, nuts, woody, earthy, and some smoke. Tastes of caramel, toffee, dark fruits, light brown sugar, and lightly earthy. Malty and sweet.

A fine lasting and glass coating meringue overlays the filtered deep amber garment. Atypically hoppy version bumping up the nostrils with whiffs of fluoride reminiscent both minty/hempy and mineralic hops, expressive on the fruitiness (the malt deviated berries complementing hop related citrus). Toasted malts offers thorough backing, hard, bringing forward an array of ashey and minty hop biscuit flavors. Strong yet friendly carbonation betrays the malt shyness, accentuating the relative palate thinness and outstripping a sense of unity. Focusing on drinkability obviously, but leaving me very curious at how an unfiltered version would compare.

Dark red-foxy; very little carbonation, and coloured head fast gone. Sharpish vegetable smell, as (sweetwater) algae; coloured malts and lots of it. Toasted, crumbly hard bread or crisps in the end. Just a whiff of hops, and charcoal. Very outspoken taste of coloured and roasted malts, stout-ish without being it - roasted barley. In a second helping, an explosion of resiny hops, I find little or no citrus here. There is a touch of saltiness hidden, however. Sligthly oily texture, very remarkable. No carbonation, but doesn’t feel dead. Bit strange for an old ale. To me, more a cross between an APA and a dry stout. Which is perfect with me. Grand merci à Olivier!

The Lure:
Earthy, raw hoppiness escapes the furtive caramel. Citrus fruit hang around, admiring the lacing. Subtle, and evidently hop-accented.

The Festivities:
Leafy, earthy, resinous hops evolve into a green, youthful bitterness. Inexpressive malts do offer fruity caramel at the onset, but for the most part remain in the back rows. Citrusy hops and effervescent carbonation make it all easy to drink despite the sometimes crude hops. This is neither an Old Ale in the Prize Old Ale category, nor in Theakston Old Peculier’s, but rather a close cousin to McNeill’s Old Ringworm (don’t know many other old ales like these basically).

Transcendence:
Waking up early in a dew-covered forest.

Bottled. Light amber coloured. Unclear. Dense light brown head. Sweetness, flowers, caramel and light spiced aroma. Flavour is herbal, caramel, light medical and light metallic. Medium bodied. Nice bitter and dry end.
