The aroma is very sweet with notes of coffee and chocolate, but also a hint of some kind of cleaner - I wonder if it is the smoked malt? The flavor is sweet and to begin with quite straight down the road malty with only light notes of roastyness, but it grows on You in the aftertaste coming out with notes of the smoked malt, coffe, chocolate, but also some acidity. The aftertaste lingers for a long time with smoked wood and roasted malt, but still with the acidic note lingering in the background. I’m not that crazy about the acidic note, but otherwise this is a really nice beer. csbosox (1082), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 30, 2005 Thanks to BBM for this one. 2004, 341mL bottle. Served in my NB glass @ 47.5°. Pours black with an every so slight hint of red at the edges. The short lived head is light mocha that dies down to a ring and some bubbles. The aroma is smoke and to a lesser extent, chocolate and coffee-ish malt. The flavor is sweet malt and smoke, give me the iodine and you might get an Islay out of it. The midtaste is fruity when the hops kick in. The bitterness blends nicely with the smoke in the finish, alternating dominant presences. The finish is dry with tons of lingering flavors. The smoke blend in very well with this beer, it is not overpowering, but adds lots to the flavor profile. I think smoked beers are a tough one to get right, but this one succeeds. I hope it is on tap in October when I am in Montreal. kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Emil (6074), Copenhagen, Denmark

Flavour of smoke and wood with notes of caramel.
Not bad, but I ’m not very fond of smoked beers.
