Served lightly chilled in a tulip. Deep mahogany brown color to the body with a small amount of tan head, some retention. Some dark burgundy highlights can be seen on the edges when held to the light. Aroma of hickory, light bacon and charred fish, though it is not as strong as that makes it sound, allowing for a bit of bitter roast and black chocolate to creep in. Flavor retains the smokiness seen in the aroma (it "keeps it real" so to speak), and there is plenty of saltiness and dry chocolate. Ripe blackberries and dark raspberries are noted on the finish, with a lingering note of hickory smoke that is highly pleasant. The body was the weak point, in my sample, starting out a bit too carbonated and bubbly, with some thinning on the end. But as the beer approaches room temperature, the smoke and roast come forth and my qualms with the body are more or less forgotten. As far as flavor is concerned, this is the best smoked porter I’ve had, not being too smokey, but yet not making you hunt for the smoke either. If they could just work on getting a little more malt chewiness and thickness of body, it would be phenomenal, IMHO. Perhaps I need to try a fresher sample, which I am looking forward to doing in the future. 8/4/8/3/15 2005 draught at MondialHoly crap. This is one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Rich, thick, balanced smokiness, with pure luscious milk chocolate and mild roast. Touch of green hops flavor and a chewy, rich mouthfeel. Deep and dark, opaque with a big, creamy head. 8/5/9/5/18 Crockett (904), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada

Smoked chocolate malt aroma.Good whiff of smoke over the musty yeast, chocolate roasty flavour of the beer. Very smooth and good mouthfeel. Berries, rich and buttery. Alchohol is well hidden. Delicious. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 3, 2005 Black in color with an extremely large, mountainous, rugged, rigged, bubbly and thick head of light brown foam. Aromas of smoked bacon and rich malts. Succulant malt flavor with the smoked flavor being only an element in this onslaught of flavors. Chocolate, cocoa, black currants and smoked bacon. Fairly complex overall, although it’s a bit simplistic in the aroma. collieman (191), montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Feb 6, 2005 Wow. This is another perfect beer from Bičropholie. Bottle. Pours thick black with a caramel-tan head, quickly fades leaving no trace on the glass. Aroma is smoked nuts, roasted grain, chocolate. Palate is smoth, chocolate milk, low }although present} carbonation. Tatste is smoth, chocolate malt, smokey, fire wood, light sweetness, plenty of bitter hop but it’s all nutrulized by the choice of malt. Aftertaste is sweet roasted nut with a lovley dry bitterness. Hard to belive this is a strong beer, since there is no boose present in the flavour. Truly a great beer, but a sipper, not for getting drunk, but to be savoured with every taste. Dark brown colour with a tan head. Some coffee, but mostly a smoked birch wood flavour. Very enojyable. Sammy (4049), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Smooth with coffee roast and chocolate. Interesting black appearance. Medium mouthfeel. Wouldn’t make this my regular beer because of potential nitrates, thanks for the sample Lubiere.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 12, 2005 Thick, light brown head. Creamy on top Settles nicely. Low carbonation. Awesome smokey, meaty, salty aroma. Slightly sweet with roasted malts and some soy sauce. Color is a very dark brown/black. Flavor is very smoky. Almost too smoky in my opinion. I prefer a mellow smoke flavor while this is very smoky. Smooth and creamy in the mouth. Bit of bitterness and dryness. Little bit salty. A very good smoked beer. The over the top smoke flavor dissipates after a couple of minutes. Thanks to tiggmtl for this one. Eructoblaster (1505), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 27, 2004 2004 vintage. Opaque black body topped with an average beige frothy head. Wonderful and complex roasted coffee aroma with smokey, malty, chocolate, dark berries, and brown sugar hints. Delicious smokey taste that leaves a long and strong coffeeish/bitter aftertaste. A very good smoked beer. Deserves the honor to be my 400th beer rated!
