341 ml bottle. Deep oily black hole of a body, creamy dark swirling lasting head....smoked gouda, grapes and caramel with just a hint of meat on the nose, enthralling...full, very smooth mouthfeel, pleasant smoky-sweet flavor with a nice late coffee roastiness giving more complexity...I liked this more than the ’03, personally, though I’m not sure I had that at its best.

A gift from tiggmtl... thanks. Pitch black with a thick light brown head and lasting heavy lacing. Aroma of sweet dark malt, dark fruit, coffee and a beechwood smoke aroma. Mouthfeel is quite full with a perfect amount of sweetness. Flavour also shows smoke, raisins/prunes, coffee with a touch of coffee/hoppy bitterness rounding it off. Perfectly balanced. I spent a good hour enjoying this one.

Bottle pours black, edges of dark brown, small fizzly light brown head that quickly disappears, with so-so lacing.   A nice burnt malt aroma with subtle hints of charred wood and bakers chocolate.   Very nice thick malty flavor, comprised of burnt malts, light soy, chocolate, and charred wood.   This is quite smooth.   It is also fairly sweet, with maybe some fig/date qualities as well.    Wonderful body with a smooth, yet crisp, mouthfeel.   Lingering smoke and burnt malts, with a touch of bitterness and apple/pear cider in the aftertaste.   I do believe I prefer this one to Alaskan Smoked Porter.   Thanks goes out to radiomgb for the trade!

2004 Version. Black in colour. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malt and smoke. Flavour was of chocolate malt, smoke, some caramel and coffee. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeel with high carbonation. Finishes with a long and smokey bitterness. Very nicely done!!

2003 Version. Near black with a tan head. Aroma of smoke, malts, dark chocolate, coffee. Flavour was very roasty, with chocolate and smoke. Finishes with a smokey bitterness that lasts and lasts. 8/10 5/5 8/10 5/5 17/20

The latest batch (early 2007) is just as fantastic as the previous batches. From the 750ml bottle or on tap at Vices et Versa, this is simply superior. A world class smoked porter, or beer for that matter.

(2004):
Level-headed smoke slowly drifting on lactic chocolate malts...A sensual palate ensues, very well balanced by subdued malt roastiness...A blueberry mirage occasionally flashes in and out of the portly yet somewhat frothy body...This is really something to look forward to every year when it comes out...

(2003s):
(Batch no.1; golden cap)
Funky, fuming marshes of chocolate peat...Boiling blackberries on coal...A creamy and bitter phoenix slowly rises out of the ashes...

(Batch no.2; silver cap)
A rich, roasted cream aroma lures to very dry, harsh ashes...A rising blade of bitterness cures the quite spry, marsh splashes...A fainter smoke covers the milk and endures the once-lit, larch matches...(Comparing): Dry, roasted ashes and dark fruit predominates in the golden cap version, whereas it is the creaminess of the body and a lactic, smoky fruitiness which oversees the silver cap version...Both are mind-blowingly classy, complex, and flavorful...Bizarrely, I had rated both, months apart, with exactly the same numbers...

A very dark brown (almost black) beer with an off white head. This one is smokey like a steinbier with caramalized malts and a bit of lemony acidity. The smoke compliments the the chocolate and coffee malts well. Quite heavy in the mouth, and the flavors linger. It would make a great winter warmer. Thanks to radiomgb for the tasty extra!

Virtually opaque dark ruby colour with a lasting rocky head. First smell was all chocolate and coffee. Second was hickory smoked bacon. From there it all blended nicely. Nice smokiness retained in the flavour to complement the roasted coffee and chocolate, finishing with a deep roasty bitterness. Smooth, medium bodied, but something seemed to be missing in the mouthfeel. Still very tasty and satisfied a craving I’ve had for a good smoked beer. Thanks tiggmtl.

09.07.04 341ml bottle. Pours black - as black as I’ve ever seen a beer. Fine brown head fades to a halo. Aromas of smokey charcoal, burnt, crispy, oily, pitchy, campfire marshmallow. Flavor is full of tar, burnt marshmallow, oats, wet wood. Dry and lactic finish. A sublime brew, exceptionally made. Could be fuller bodied, otherwise great.
