2004 edition: 8-3-8-5-16=4.0Roasted malts battle with rauch malt in the aroma with apparent notes of chocolate. Dark brown, nearly black opaque body with large dark brown head that recedes to ring with no lacing. Very smokey up front. Notes of peat as well as rauch malt, Big malty sweet underlying flavour with some hints of chocolate and long lingering smokiness and roast malt balancing bitterness in the finish. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and excellent medium body. I’m impressed. I think I pefer the new version over the original. Congrats RH. Bottle.
8/10 3/5 8/10 4/5 16/20 2004 gold cap version rated 24-Jun-04 8-3-8-4-16=3.9 Smoky raosted aroma with peat malt more apparent. Dark brown opaque body with nice brown head that recedes to cover with no lacing. Still find notes of chocolate, smoked malt - both peat and rauch, with roasty finish to balance the sweetness. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and excellent full body. Overall, I find it’s changed slightly and I like it better. Bottle. 2003 silver cap version rated 28-Oct-03 8-4-8-4-15=3.9 Smokey roasted aroma with some sweet chocolate discernable also. Dark brown/black with a chocolate brown two-finger head that recedes to a film coating the sides of the glass all the way down. Wow what a journey. Starts with a chocolatey sweetness that morphs into a roasted coffee flavour which quickly becomes overtaken by the smoke and then mellows out to a peatiness and finishes with a nice even roasted dark malt flavour with a slight sour undertone. Body and mouthfeel are huge. Perhaps could stand to be just a bit more dry. What a monster! Bottle.

Opaque dark brown, medium fading tannish head. Rich aroma: astringent and husky, smoky/ashy, oaky, roasted. Smoke is less apparent in the initial flavor, instead a rounded husky roasted malt sits big up front. Surprisingly light body, and light acrid ashy finish. Smoke lingers long on the palate. A smoked baltic porter?

Deep black color with a thin tan head. Very nice and rich aroma of smoked malt and roasted malt. Nice smoky and roasty flavor with a bitter finish. Light to medium body, creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. I like the first batch of Calumet better but this is still a pretty good beer.

Silky black color with a tan head that dissipates to a lid of small bubbles. Small dots of lace Liquid smoke nose evaporates to a mellow dark caramel, light coffee, mild oak and dark chocolate aroma. Thick and lightly oily. the first two quaff I completely forgot that this was a smoke beer. I was engrossed in the feel and rich malty goodness. LIght sweet malt with cocoa, rye toast and molasses. Nice black malt bitterness. Linger of peat and caramel malt. Well made and balanced. A brew for a hearty backyard BBQ. Red meat and sausage type of brew. Thanks to Rastacouere for sending this my way.

(Brewed at Le Chaudron) Black beer; dark brown, mixed-bubbles head, good carbonation. Moccha, ink, walnuts and hazelnuts (or hazelnut chocolate), freshly sawn hardboard in the nose. Bitter-sweet chocolate, nutty and tobacco flavours but not really smoked as a Rauchbier. Faint sourish finish, nice touch for the balance. Typical for a porter/stout, the "chewy" factor is much higher than the probable apparent gravity. Slight but notable dry-out effect. A very nice, balanced porter. Unless it’s for the smoked factor, I cannot dig why René H. is so weary of ’old’ ratings. I confess as to have tasted a ’gold cap’. It is a porter - not a smoked beer, and I like it. Again thanks to MartinT and Rastacouere.

I really have trouble getting into the smoked porters for some reason. Pours a black/dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma is an organic/earthy burnt smell...I guess you could call it smokey but that would be a stretch. The flavor has more of a smoke flavor with a strong malt note. A decent bitterness comes through with some chocolate as well. Body is somewhat thin. Finishes dry.
