Aroma of bitter coffee beans and dark chocolate. Taste is of bitter dark chocolate with cherry hints, roasted coffee beans and dark cocoa. Bitter all around, but it leaves a nice chocolaty cherry aftertaste. Almost wine-like Excellent !! fishead (28), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 25, 2007 Bottle - 2006 vintage - snifter. Onyx-black body with a dark brown head the rose to the top of the glass, then quickly dropped down without disappearing completely. Coffee and dark chocolate notes that fade quickly. Good, but lacks the punch of a truly great imperial stout. BitchesBrew (710), Berkeley, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 20, 2007 [2006 bottle] Pitch black in color, with an impressive dark brown head. Really nice aroma, dark cocoa, roasted and chocolate malts, and a bit of cherry-like frutiness. Flavors are dark and earthy, with plenty of chocolate and coffee. Alcohol is somewhat apparent. Turns almost woody with a hint of smoke towards the finish. Full mouthfeel. I could sit and sniff this beer all night long, but flavor-wise this is kind of mediocre. Intense aroma of roastiness, dry wood, subtle chocolate, and marshmallows. Flavor is similar but muted and tastes past its prime. Infection? Body is medium at best, balanced carbonation. Too light. Disappointing after a knockout nose. jason (1623), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 26, 2007 Bottle thanks to Hogtownharry, Thanks man! Poured a dark black body with good size head. Aroma was fanatastic, I was sniffing this for awhile. Aroma of sweet chocolate. Flavor was a little too thin and disappointing from the aroma. Slightly bitter. I thought it would be a thicker mouthfeel, but still a good Imperial Stout. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 10, 2007 750ml, courtesy of Jayg. Pours black, totally opaque. Gorgeous, extremely dark brown head with black highlights and a light tan rim. Quickly receding, leaving what looks like a glass of Castrol GTX, used. Vinous aroma, melted bitter expensive chocolate. Cavernous depth to the brash oak aromas. Also notes of raisin brandy, and alcohol that seems more intense than the average imperial stout, odd since it’s in fact lower. The body is initially creamy, thinning quickly, as roasty graininess forms a coating on my tongue. The flavor is not as good as the aroma, with huge roasted malt in the fore, chocolate and light marshmallow immediately following, in unison. Chocolate taste fades in the finish, leaving dust of cocoa, chalky smoky malts too. Light hops linger, very vinous throughout. I believe the version we had was a 2004, I’d like to try this fresh. Pours out of the bottle almost like a black chocolate syrup. Little tan head and nice lacing. Nose is rich cocoa with very mild coffee notes. medium bodied with notes of dark chocolate and cream initially, a little smoke, and some alcohol leaving a a dry roasted coffee/hop bitterness on the palate. A very well done and unique imperial. Word up, canucks.
