| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 15, 2007 Very deep caramel brown body with glowing reds nestled underneath. Totally opaque and candied in appearance. A creamy, thin beige head with some yellows fades rather quickly, but not fully. Lacing looks gooey. The whole thing actually looks very filling. Scents of caramel malt escape from the glass and are vibrant from a great distance as the appearance is pondered. Aroma consists of toffee, raisins, plums, toasted grains, caramel, chocolate, smoke, sherry and alcohol. Peated malt is abundant and tingles with deep breaths. The alcoholic notes are moderate and mildly intrusive. Malt is full and lush. The chocolate in the aroma is outrageously rich and exciting even though it’s hard to separate it’s subtleties from the onslaught of caramel and lesser nuances. This smells as much like an English barleywine as a Scotch ale and is very easy to get lost in. Flavors are a sweet, spicy expression of the aforementioned. Caramel totally dominates the flavor with the presence of smoke and peat following, growing with each sip. Peppery notes appear shortly into the session. Bitterness is moderate, woodiness following in it’s steps. Acidity is light, though moderate for the style. Fruit notes are now very coy. The palate is well carbonated, full bodied and wonderfully creamy and rich. Finishes salty, mildly spicy, rich with caramel and smoke notes, some peated malt lingering a long while. The finale is moderately dry and bitter too. This is a tremendous beer. I love the way Scotch ales vary in aroma, and moreso in taste, from brewer to brewer. Delicious before-dinner treat. moejuck (1172), Ohio, USA

Dark bown body with a medium head. Medium palate. Strong bitterness up front and lots of the same in the finish. Inbetween is a nice blend of toffee and light fruits. Very good. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 26, 2007 Bottle... Opaque, very dark brown ale with a mid-sized, fizzy, tan head. Decent retention. Caramel, smoky nose with notes of beef stock, dried plums, cocoa, port and dates. Huge, vinous, malty flavor with blasts of caramel, dried plum, alcohol, smoke and dark, bittersweet chocolate. Generous hopping and big, bitter alcohol balance this baby almost all the way out... however, in the end, a Scotch ale will be a Scotch ale... leaning well onto the sweet side of balance. Full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and ticklish carbonation. Lengthy, bittersweet, warming, mojave-dry finish. Huge, HUGE thanks to beerbuzzmontreal for keeping me supplied with quality Scotch ales! marcbé (86), Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada

Aroma of strawberry, yeast, roast and maybe some tobbaco. Taste is sweet in the begining then the bittterness takes all the place. Very good. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2007 Courtesy of HogtownHarry. Thank you, sir. The aroma is a very concentrated sweetness that comes across as sharp due to the sheer force of aromatic concentration. Caramel, light smoke, malt, dark breadsand a mild nuttiness are also present. The body is a deep brown and holds a lasting, thumb thick, tan head that leaves clingy lace.

Fore is sweet and malty with dark bread, alcohol and faint smoke. The flavor very much follows the aroma. It gets a touch watery tasting towards the finish, but the mouthfeel is very enjoyable. It has an alcohol hotness in the far finish along with some fruit and caramel sweetness. JCB (1791), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 21, 2007 341ml bottle courtesy of radiomgb - thanks, Jeff! As a fan of Scotch and Wee Heavy, I was really eager to try this and it didn’t really disappoint. Lovely caramel flavors along with smoke, bold malts, and a tad of hazelnut. It’s just a little bit over the top in its sweetness for my tastes, but this is a really solid example of the style - too bad it’s retired. iowaherkeye (1873), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 29, 2006 341mL bottle traded with HogTownHarry, no date. Pours a clear orangeish reddish darker brown with a one finger beige head. Aroma of sweet raisins and dates, peated malt and smoke, roasted and nutty malts, scorched caramel. Overall pretty sweet. Taste up front is fairly "bock-y," pretty sweet with lots of malt presence. Taste follows the aroma quite nicely. Dry slightly bitter finish, with some warming alcohol present. Full bodied, moderate smooth carbonation with soft tiny bubbles. Quite nice.
