Head is creamy with a tight bead, tan in colour. Big sweet malt nose, some dark chocolate notes with an interesting dash of spice (pepper, black liquorice?). Flavour also features big malts, toffee hints, and black liquorice. Herbal and dry finish with some earth. Medium to full in body, mild carbonation. Interesting. dmac (1500), Toms River, New Jersey, USA

Pours a reddish brown with the loudest, yes I said loudest, head that I have ever heard. It sounded like a soda with all the fizzing going on, fizzy yellowish/beige head. Aroma of raisin, toffee, peat, hint of smoke, earth, rum and a touch of spearamint. Body was on the thinner side of the medium scale with light carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Flavor of light smoke from the alcohol, caramel and toffee, raisin, earthy and spicey. For a brewery that isn’t available in the US I am quickly becoming one of the top raters of Bieropholie so keep em coming Dany. Pyrozoid (352), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 3, 2009 341 mL bottle. Opaque orange-brown with a brown head that begins well, but fades to a thick ring. Really a lovely smelling beer; smells like the mint humbugs my grandfather used to eat. The flavour is dominated by black licorice, along with some mint and a touch of chocolate. Has the malty sweetness of a Scotch Ale, but it is certainly not overdone. A touch of bitterness at the end. Little of the roast and none of the smoke you sometimes find in a Scotch Ale. Very drinkable. SoLan (1427), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Courtesy ChzMan. Brown/dark amber. Thin layer of tan carbonation. Aroma of petting zoo/dry dog food, hay, earthy peat, roasted malt, medicinal herbs. Flavor adds deep caramelization, cocoa, more peat. Medium/full body, balanced carbonation. Weird but enjoyable scotch ale. Lubiere (4549), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 19, 2008 A deep dark brown ale with reddish hues, and a thin moka head. A pleasant aroma of chocolate, butterscotch and molasses, with good vinous notes, and a bit of vanilla. In mouth, an oily mouthfeel of burned caramel, licorice, and treacle. A bit short, but overall, a good representation of the style. Bottle bought at Jovi, Hull, 2.99$. Boutip (2390), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 13, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with some retention and good lacing. Aroma is a ix between some chocolates and caramel notes with some distinctive star anises notes. Taste is also a nice mix between some robust caramel malt notes with some light touch of black chocolate and some easily distinctive notes of star anises. Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed the spicy take on the scotch ale style and I did not think it was too dominant as other prior reviews. Draught at Brouhaha. Scotch ale or not, this is one tasty spicy, caramelly beer which does not forget about drinkability.
I like:
Sweetness is absolutely kept under control. The spice level is not abusive at all, just unusual for the one who expects a straightforward scotch ale. Appealing jammy fruit profile rich with ripe cherries, strawberries and plums. Toasty, clean malt profile provides s surprisingly chewy body for a Bièropholie. Comfortable, smoothly carbonated and coherent.
I dislike:
Some hop or peat audacity might be a fun addition, but I like it a lot as it is.
