This silky and round Belgian-style Strong Ale promotes lightly caramelized cereals, baccate esters and doughy yeast atop green, spicy hops which tend to bloom late in each sip.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the clear burgundy(?!).
-These spicy hops are also leafy and earthy in the finish, offering pleasant bitterness.
-The mouthfeel is not as crisp as I’d like in this style.
-Effervescence is soft but uplifting.
-The nose is rather linear and timid on this one (it’s mostly yeasty), which is not the case with the very different first batch (described below).
-Light alcohol warmth is felt, but it’s never bothersome.
-Some toasted cereal character is also tasted within.
-This is a good beer like all Bièropholie products (well brewed, tasty and drinkable), but it is not really what you want when you buy a ’Tripel’, mostly on account of the dark malt flavors and their dextrins.
Bottle; Brassin #2.
’Brassin #1’ was undercarbonated and sold with a warning in but a few stores, but aside from this problem with effervescence, I have to say its hoppy nose and finish were spicier, the malt profile felt a tad leaner (not crisp enough though, for my tastes) and the doughy yeast fit in perfectly; we had a balanced Tripel in this first batch. I won’t score this one, but I would like the third batch to be based on this one rather than the second brew.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Aug 20, 2009 Pours mahogney brown with off-white bubbly head, and that left lots of spider lace. However, the first tasting had almost no head. Aroma is yeasty however somewhat barleywinish was first tasting. Taste is noticeably thin for the style. Taste was Ok, a bit sweet, basic and drying finish. HogTownHarry (4025), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 18, 2009 Bottle (341ml). Shared by blankboy with me and garthicus. Clear deep copper, average frothy off-white head. Mild roast caramel malt, sweet yeast, coriander, alcohol, a bit of dry grass - weird: like a 2-1 blend of generic tripel and dubbel. Tastes the same - sweet, oddly roasty, moderately boozy only - nice soft mouthfeel, gentle carbonation, a spicy, sharp finish. blankboy (3239), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 18, 2009 My bottle (341ml) shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o Viper666. Pours a hazy orange-amber with an average size off-white head. Aroma: Like a nice Triple with a good amount of hops added. Flavour of toasted malt, spices, herbal hops, dark fruit and alcohol. Medium bodied. Really good, I’m not sure this is really on style (it’s not as sweet for one thing) but I quite like it. beerbuzzmontreal (2921), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Sep 26, 2009 Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a thin beige head. The aroma has mostly caramel and spices, it’s somewhat fruity too. The flavor has a blend of spices, caramel and mild fruits. This is far from what you’d expect from a tripel and by far the worst beer ever brewed by Bièropholie. Glouglouburp (2874), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Aug 21, 2009 In short: A spicy caramelized syrupy sweet beer of some kind. Not a abbey style tripel and not a good beer
How: Bottle 341ml. Batch 2. Drank a few bottles that were between 2 months and 8 months old
The look: Almost clear dark copper body topped by very small beige head
In long: Nose is some kind of spicy alcohol shooter. Syrupy sweet body. Cloying sweetness. Spicy hops... no I take that back, spices and not hops (obviously that’s not the case but that’s what it felt like). Sweet berries and cardboard dipped in caramel. There was something in the finish attempting to dry out the beer but it felt like someone put a cardboard piece in my mouth. I even got a light anise flavour?!? I’ll stop here, this is a fucked-up beer. Their Double was pretty nice but something went wrong here with the usually reliable Bieropholie. Not only is it totally off as far as the style is concerned but it is also a mess regardless of the style. This beer is to Abbey Tripels what a banana-ketchup sandwich is to jazz music.
