Malty and caramelly with a little bit of a toasty flavor, slightly bready and easy to drink, Its more of a slightly richer amber ale than a barley wine. Beerlando (2353), Orlando, Florida, USA

Pours a clear, medium orange color with a thin crown of tan foam. A swirl of the glass reveals thick, droopy legs that meander their way back into the body, leaving minimal amounts of spotting behind. The nose shows sweet candy sugar, caramel, dry, wheat-like grains, and a mild amount of grassy hops. Flavors include a surprising but welcomed addition of candied orange peel to accompany the caramel sugars. The dry grains really seem out of place here. The sweetness is also a bit much for my liking. Medium-full, syrupy body. Alcohol isn’t really detectable. Decent brew, but lacking in several areas. rustychiles (1068), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Pours a reddish brown with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is sweet, malts, caramel and hops. Flavor of molasses, sugar, fruit, some earthiness as well. Has a lingering bitterness that hits in the end. Interesting brew. probstk (1064), Nepean, Ontario, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 23, 2008 341 mL bottle from Trappe a Fromage, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear, deep red-amber, decent orange-tan head.
Aroma: Intensely sweet and a brothy, huge gobs of very sweet, sticky malts, treacle/toffee/caramel, with an underlying and unsettling meaty broth aroma, no discernable hops.
Palate: Medium-full body, fairly soft carbonation, syrupy.
Flav.: Butterscotch and toffee, thankfully no broth, some dried dark fruits, brown sugar, molasses, mint, licorice, rootbeer; quite sweet with fair bitterness; leaves a little bitterness, flinty, fruitiness and a touch of hops, quite boozy.
Not sure if I’m big on the “barley wine” style, not a favourite ESA either. I’ve got another bottle that I’ll lay down for a while to see what happens. Boutip (2399), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 8, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear copper color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with some toffee notes and caramel. Taste is also dominated by some sweet malt with distinctive notes of caramel and toffee. Fairly low hops presence which does fit the beer properly as accent should be put toward malt. Medium body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I very much appreciated that one and it reminds me of Youngs Old Nick. IrishBoy (2722), Bakersfield, California, USA

Nose of light berry fruitiness, caramel, and grassy hops; rusty red with a medium straw head; flavor is sweetness, berry, caramel, and light alcohol; a small amount of hops shows in the finish. Pours a clear copper-gold with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, candi sugar and light hops...I think, it’s a weird one. Flavour’s sweet, sugary and boozy along with caramel, fruit and hops. Medium bodied, oily mouthfeel. Decent -- I don’t think I could drink a whole bottle of this, it’s too sweet and boozy.
