Commercial Description:
Surrender Monkey is our interpretation of one of our favorite styles of beer; Belgian farmhouse ales. It is strong and complex. It is over 9% abv. and perfectly blends a spicy and slightly sweet finish with a subtle fruitiness derived from our favorite Belgian yeast strain. This ale is cellared for months until we deem it ready for our discriminating customers. We take great pride in presenting you this beer and ask that it be consumed responsibly.

Draft at WBF Raleigh on 5/2/09. Called Monkey Business Farmhouse Ale. Cloudy gold pour. Short white head. Aroma is rather spicy and yeasty. Taste is equally spicy with more yeast notes, flowers, and fruit coming through. Light candyish sweetness as well. Light-medium feel and very bubbly. Ends with more spices, yeast, light grain, fruit and sweet malt. Listed as a saison, if I recall the fest notes correctly.

WBF sample. Pours a hazy soft yellow with a one finger offwhite head. The nose was yeasty, peppery, spicy, Belgian yeast for sure, orange peel, some coriander. The flavor is yeasty, orange peel, Belgian/earthy feel, spicy, slightly sweet, nice flavor. Spicy crisp palate.

On tap at World Beer Festival, renamed "Monkey Business.’ I thought this was a sold farmhouse/saison beer. Spicey, with funky yeast and some citrusy fruit. Some banana and perhaps a bit too much clove. Hazy light orange pour with decent head. I could drink a lot more of this.

This was one of the worst beers I’ve ever head. On tap at Village Draft House in Raleigh, NC. My friend Jen ordered but I couldn’t resist due to the funny name. It tasted like dirty alcoholic soapwater. It looked normal, but taste normal it did not. my friend Jen could barely bring herself to finish it. "I surrender monkey" was said many times as we surrendered to its awfulness and couldn’t proceed to drink anymore. Now, thinking about maybe something was up with the tap or we were given a dirty glass but do not surrender and order this beer. try another.

Brown pour, with a yeast aroma. Clove, coriander, and esters. Decent in a pint glass , but could be better in proper glassware.

Cloudy orange, decent white head. Spicy and very fruity aroma - cherry and blueberry and maybe some coriander. Flavor is notes of clove, white wine, some banana and pineapple and perhaps some herbal, oregan-ish notes. At the Raleigh WBF.

On tap; poured an orange that was so dark it was almost brown. Aroma of yeast, clove/spice and must. Flavor of belgian yeast, fruit and spice. Easy drinking. Some minimal sweetness. Just ok for me

2007 WBF. This one was terribly disappointing -- Farmhouse ales are generally my favorite overall style. I’m not sure what they were going for, but in my opinion it just didn’t work. Disjointed and lacking depth.
