solid black, thin fine tan head, rich dry malt aroma with hints of smokey chocolate, creamy body, increadable huge rich malt flavor, nice ripe fruit with plums and raisons, lots of carmel flavor but well tempered with just a bit of sweetness, good chocolate, nice smokey peat in the finish that just grows and grows as it warms, no smoke or peat used in the brewing

The taste is malty, sweet, caramel, well round. Similar to the Red Hydrant Ale, but sweeter. Pleasant. CaptainCougar (5530), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 23, 2006 Sampled from a growler courtesy of kp: Pours a dark mahogany with ruby huies and a thin tan head. Sweet dark malty and mildly peaty aroma has a touch of dark fruits. Starts sweet and sticky with lots of dark caramel malt and some mild plum flavor with some dark Belgian candi sugar sweetness. A touch of bitterness in the finish rounds out this nice, fairly authentic Scotch ale. ¾ (5006), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/20 | Jul 14, 2004 Medium brown with a light tan head. Faint scotch and wood aroma... thin, tastes like a bad liqour that has been watered down. Upsets the stomach. has some maple and grass, but still really bad. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA

Almost a grape tone to it. Re-Rate after visiting the brewpub: see my notes on the Irish Red; I'm convinced they had the tabs reversed. The above earlier rating goes more with what was served to me as the Red. dwyerpg (2553), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 13, 2006 Looks and smells nice. Fairly sweet, but also a little sour. Sweeter at the finish and more than one would expect for the style. Tasted a little light actually on the alcohol too, but still fairly decent. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
