Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 30, 2008 Mostly clear, green-gold, very thin head. Light Belgian aroma, dubbel-esque, contrary to the appearance, and a little smoked/tawny smelling. Tart, clear gel Belgian flavor, astringent bittering (what little of it there is.) Unripe sloes, stonefruit flavors. Medium body, flabby, sour finish. HonkeyBra (1258), Lemont, Illinois, USA Aug 15, 2008 Had this at the Wheeling restaurant. I suppose Ernest is right in saying that this is an oversimplified version of a Belgian Strong, but it’s still decent nonetheless. Basically, it’s a generic version, but it’s drinkable. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Mar 27, 2003 Draught.
Body is light yellow.
Aroma is
lightly malty (toasted grain),
with notes of banana and clove.
Flavor is
moderately sweet, lightly acidic.
Finish is
lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
Alcohol seems to be well-hidden, but this is an over-simplified representation of Belgian golden ales. I'm glad more and more microbrewers and brewpubs in America are attempting to replicate Belgian beer in general, though.
