CharlesDarwin (1376), State College, Pennsylvania, USA May 31, 2008 750mL unlabelled bottle. Nice citrus flesh aroma. Good spice and floral character. Great saison character. Pours a clearish bright gold, with a rim of white. Flavor is a bit of a washed out, acerbic grass and spice. Super, super dry. Tart and curt. Nice. Fresh and light. Malts are a bit light and eaten up, but the spiced character works well. So fresh, dry and hoppy. This is excruciatingly drinkable. Effervescent. Minerals back up the spice. Excellent. A very nice saison. I love the ridiculous dryness matching the saison yeast. Thanks Sean!
Styles (1653), Taylor, Michigan, USA Dec 27, 2007 7-22-06 MBG. Huge funky aroma, spice, skunk, and dusty basement. Flavor a little less forward. Some residuel sweetness with floral/skunk combo in the finish. Decent overall. Have notes on the ’07 as well when I get to them. bu11zeye (3628), Frisco, Texas, USA Oct 31, 2007 (Draught) Pours a lightly hazy pale yellow with a small white head. Aroma of citrus, syrupy sweetness, apple, and hint of soap. Flavor of herbs, florals, biscuit, and lemon. Pailhead (2310), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Aug 8, 2007 On tap: The aroma is a combination of bretty lemon sourness with some light apple and faint yeastiness. It’s a hazy gold with a small white head. The flavor starts with a quick yeastiness with some apple in the background. The finish has some mild tart lemon with some light floral notes. Very refreshng. Overall, I was very impressed with Big Rock at the MiBGF ’07. BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Aug 4, 2007 MiBGF 07: Slightly hazy golden hue with a minimal head or lace. The aroma has notes of grassy and herbal hops, pale malt, wheat husk, slight apple and pear esters, dusty olde skool yeast esters too. The taste has a slight tartness at first with a biscuity and wheat background. A nice grassy and wildflower finish. A simple but wonderful sipping brew than is shockingly refreshing. I really dug this and can only guess they tweaked the recipe since last year.
