Sweet malt aroma, slightly sweet ending that gets dry quickly. Good for chugging on a hot day. Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2004 Great grainy aroma. Clear yellow gold. Good label. Mellow, slightly tart, crackery brew with light sweetness. Medium body. Not great, not bad. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 16, 2004 Thanks Osborne Freehouse. Grainy and malty sweet. Crisp like a wheat but not much wheat. Thin-medium mouthfeel. pootzboy (1035), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada Jun 7, 2004 Just got back from Calgary and have been aching to dive into the 12 Grasshoppers I bought there. I have passed it at the beer store for so long and decided to give this western Canadian Kristal Weizen clone a try because of all the glowing reports from friends. I’m a confirmed Shneider hefe weiss drinker so I was not optomistic that a large brewer like Big Rock could carry off the "Canadianization" of this classic Bavarian style.
I was right...but this beer is OK in a pinch if the Euro weizens are not available.
Poured a clear (filtered) orange-gold with a smallish white cap that vanished about as fast as any Canuck mega brew....not an impressive start. Had slight grassy and citrus aromas mingled with sweet malt smells. Highly carbonated to mimic the natural bottle conditioned carbonation of the finer unfiltered Bavarian weizens.
Started crisp and citusy-tart then mellows to a malty sweetness and mild peppery taste with a watery mouth feel then the finish is clean with little after taste...NOT a Euro weizen...not even close, BUT a fairly clean drinking standard commercial brew with no ajuncts or preservatives made with top grade ingredients and above average quality.
If you crave German weizens give this a pass and get 3 liters of Schneiders or Ayinger or 4 Erdinger or Konig Ludwig instead of six of these domestics. If you get stuck in vacation country with no Euro weizens to be found this will do in a pinch. Beer Snob (378), Ontario, Canada Jun 6, 2004 Updated: Dec 11, 2008Mild, like an introduction to wheats for the uninitiated. Slight fruitiness, slight head, slight bitterness. Slight. Crockett (904), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada May 20, 2004 Pours gold/amber with a lasting foamy off white head. Grassy, slightly lemony, traces of toasted cereal aroma. Thin body. Sweet and citric. Very light but evenly balanced. Notes of caramel. Light bitter finish. Decent and refreshing. But boring.
