Very intense and appealing aroma. Sneaky smooth mouthfeel with a powerful palate. Slight carbonation bite on the finish, but it strangely balances out the smoothness of the nose. The malt profile isn’t enormous by any means, just solid execution of the palate/balancing of flavors and texture. While this might have a slightly different flavor than the run of the mill porter, the execution on this beer is flawless, and this is one my favorites. Ughsmash (4050), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 25, 2009 Bottled. Poured much darker than expected.. about a shade shy of black, with a deep tan head. The aroma picked up well-roasted chocolate, coffee, and molasses with a lovely dose of floral and piney hoppage.. very well balanced and enjoyable. The flavor was led by molasses and coffee maltage, well-roasted, with accents of vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate.. bitterness surrounded in the form of more coffee, pine, and earth.. long, memorable finish, with excellent balance between the components. Medium-plus bodied and well-roasted on the palate.. a little too dry and grainy at times, but that only detracted a little.. great use of hops.. I’d gladly drink this again and again. ajm (947), Los Angeles, California, USA

This particular bottle was very close in quality to Flying Dog Gonzo. Nose of thick caramel malt, milky chocolate coffee. Flavor is much the same but actual texture is less creamy and good than it smells. Beaver is right in that the bitter, grainy coffee finish interferes with the unity of the beer and makes it taste even thinner. Probably the best beer I have had from Big Sky. nbutler11 (769), Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Smells and tastes of baker’s cocoa, coffee, charcoal, and chalk. Very basic, but highly balanced and drinkable. Would drink this reguarly if it were more readily available. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 7, 2009 The beers I keep getting from Big Sky recently have really made a solid impression on me. I’ll keep exploring the different styles they have and finding some seriously hidden gems, as long as they keep making it.
The beer pours out a solid black color with a 1" rising tan head. The head dissipated down to about 1/2" for most of the bottle. Dark chocolate, coffee, a touch of smoke and ask like the smell of a cooled bbq show up in the aroma. Flavor exlodes with dark chocolate, coffee, earthy malts, subtle vanilla along with the aforementioned smoke and ash. It actually works really well with this beer and is very restrained. Very nicely done. montanabeerman (7), Bozeman, Montana, USA does not count | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 24, 2009 Dark brown/black color, beige head and nice lacing.
a big grainy and roasty aroma. Complex roasty malt flavor and weirdly enough I can pick up a bit of that vanilla. Balanced with a nice hop bitterness. long bitter aftertast. I hope they keep this one around. Big Sky needed a big porter to round out its lineup.
