bblack99 (195), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Nov 7, 2009 Pours a deep dark brown with clear ruby light shining through under a well-proportioned off-white head. Caramelly, sweet chocolate aroma. Black malts and the mix of hops make for a very tasty experience. Light toast on the malts create a depth of flavor and a nuttiness helps offset the sweetness of the caramel malt.
Creamy texture, nice finish. sigma23 (217), , Maine, USA Nov 2, 2009 can. pours deep brown with slight red highlights. large head dessipates quickly. aroma is nutty and roasted malts with a nice caramel note. drinks the same with just enough hops to keep it crisp and fresh. really decent brew bsp77 (191), Minnesota, USA Oct 29, 2009 Poured from bottle into Pint glass.
Dark brown, with a slight reddish tint. Head mostly recedes but leaves some nice lacing.
Aroma of caramel and fruit malts, with some metallic hops.
Slightly sweet caramel and chocolate malts balanced by a slight hop bitterness at the end.
Moderate carbonation and medium body. Relatively smooth.
Overall, a very nice example of an English-style Brown Ale, but there is something about it that keeps me from really wanting another.
Narnad (681), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Oct 21, 2009 Pours a robust brown in color with a very dense, creamy, tan head. Aroma has a very sweet roasted malt note with a caramel, chocolate, light grassy hops and some mild walnut nuttiness. Flavor has notes of chocolate, light caramel, a very smooth roasted character followed by a very light, unobtrusive grassy hops note. A slight burnt malt bitterness and acidic bite hit at the very end. Body of the brew is pretty dense but produces a thin texture with a mod/high amount of carbonation and great lacing is left on the glass. Overall a really good brown ale. SamGamgee (1396), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Oct 14, 2009 Draught at 99 Bottles. Dark brow color with a pathetic scattering of foam for a head. The aroma is sweet toasted bread with a nice roasty hint. The flavor has a nice toasted malt, caramel, and roasty bitterness that works well with a medium hop bitterness. Definitely on the roastier side of brown, almost venturing into porter territory. Medium bodied. Not mind-blowing by any means, but a well-crafted brown to be sure. Lyncham (48), Ohio, USA Oct 14, 2009 Updated: Oct 21, 2009Had it on draft and in bottles at Big Sky in Montana. It is pretty good in both. The flavor of the malts come across as a bit nutty. Not a bad beer to drink after skiing in a hot tub. Nice brown ale. Finhead (56), Illinois, USA Oct 12, 2009 A dark brown body with medium tan head that disipates rather quickly. It has a sweet malty aroma and a watery texture. The taste has notes of chocolate and finishes with dryer hop taste. machfive55 (218), Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 10, 2009 Pours brown with a little tan head. The aroma is malty caramel notes, the flavor is also malty with some nice caramel and toasty notes, and a nice hop background as well. Nothing spectacular, but a good solid brown ale.
