Commercial Description:
Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

Dark ruby pour with a lasting, rocky, off-white head and lots of lacing. Red grape and vinegar aroma with notes of sour apple, tart cherry and caramel. Sweet berry flavor with milk caramel, cherry, apple and and some vinous quality. Medium-thin body with lots of carbonation.

Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale bottle. Possibly my first taste of this style. Not bad. I actually found this to be more sweet than sour. Reminded me more of a hard cider than a beer. Absolutely no trace of yeast or floaties iin the bottle.

Bottle poured a light tan head with a red-brown body. Smells fruity and caramel. Flavor is sour and cherry with a finish note of caramel.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours an enticing dull red with a good 3 fingers of full foamy head. Aroma is vinegar and overripe fruit. There is a good dose of apple cider vinegar in the taste, but the overall lightness and fizzyness of the body and mouthfeel come in and rescue me from feeling like I’m performing home remedies on myself. I like sours, and I like this one.

Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale, 11.2oz bottle. Pours dark ruby brown with a 2-finger off-white head. Lots of vinegar in the aroma. Taste is rather tart and sour at first, but this gives way to a balancing cherry sweetness. Subtle flavor of apple cider vinegar. Light bodied, astringent, and fizzy. Not bad.

Source: 11.7oz bottle purchased from Archer’s grocery in Norris, TN under the name Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale.
Appearance: Ruddy brown/red color with a very thin off white head.
Aroma: Sour cherries, a bit of oak and some funk.
Flavor: Very sweet at the beginning, giving way to a pleasantly sour finish
Palate: Medium/light body with a slightly dry/prickly mouthfeel.
Overall: A great sour to begin with.

Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale bottle. Pretty good gateway to sour I would say. Nice tart cherry zing but not too puckering. Nice flavor and body with the sweetness.
