Commercial Description:
Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. The head was 1-2 fingers thick, creamy, and light tan. The nose was a tad sweet, very balsamic, woody, vinegary, not very pleasing. The flavor was slightly tart, some cherry pit, very balsamic, woody. Tart and crisp, sweet finish.

11.2 oz. bottle labeled Monk’s Cafe in trade from Snojerk321- thanks! Served in trappist glass- poured semi transparent when held to a light source, medium carbonation, off tan ring for a head that laced to a degree. Aroma of sour rotting cherries, cork, and earth. Hits the mouth with a medium body, the pucker effect hits you from the start, tart throughout, finish has very slight acidic feel combined with a lambic feel. Very interesting take on the style.

My second sour and i found it to be a little weak compared to the last but still incredibly enjoyable. Pours a ruby red colour with fairly decent tan head. Aromas of sweet ripe cherries, apples and lemon. Dissapointingly the mouthfeel was a little lighter then i would have wanted. Still creamy has slight metically taste. Taste is semi-sour, lambic like- tart, very smooth finishes slightly sweet.

Monk’s Cafe bottle, has been around the collection for a while... Pours a dark, muddy brown with a small, tan head. Big, sweet-tart nose, a little earthy. As expected, sour with some balancing sweetness. Acidic finish, refreshing. Just not all that complex...

Pours dark red/brown with a tall tan head. Very rich nose of cherry, chocolate, and earthy funkiness. Big woody sour character with a vinegar and acidic finish. A touch sweeter then most, I still thought this turned out nice.

Recommended by Ed at Ledger’s, pours deep scarlet brown with a small, fizzy, cream colored head. The nose is tart funk and cherries with a touch of wood. The flavor goes a bit more woody, but cherries are defiitely present along with a decent helping of acidity. Lively on the palate with a slight oak finish. Great sour for the $2.99 price.

Bought a single bottle labeled Monk’s Cafe. Pours a dark ruby color with a nice head. It smells a bit like sulfer (I guess lactic) at first but as you settle in with it it gets a slight bit like really rip fruit. Head stays in place at a decent level as you sip with some nice lacing. Tastes at first like a sweet vinegar. It is really, really refreshing but it kills your palate after a bit. It is nice and tart as a sour should be but perhaps not tart enough. I would have also liked to pull out the dark fruit flavors easier.

Clear red color with a nice head. Aroma wet wood and sweet fruit. Flavor is sticky with sugar and vinegar. Slight metallic bite in the finish. Little to no funk in the taste or aroma. Certainly not the best sour ale, but I enjoyed it.
