| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 13, 2008 Monk’s Cafe bottle. Pours a dark, clear, crimson red color with a small, fizzy, beige colored head. Some ultra-fine, sticky lacing clings to the glass. The aroma is fairly standard for a Flemish Red, with notes of sweet and sour, soda-like black cherries, oak, vanilla, lactose, and hints of stinky cheese all coming through. Flavors are sweet and tangy, with notes of cherry and funky, sour wood. There’s a hint of corn syrup, which is a disappointment. The palate is moderate in stature and well carbonated, but ultimately too sugary and sweet. This is decent overall, but it reminds me far too much of a cherry soda. If they eased up on those sugary malts, we might have something here. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2008 This is the Monk’s Cafe version. Deep red color with a large tan head. Oaky vanilla aroma with hints of sour cherry. Fizzy mouthfeel. Sour yet sweet. Cherry, brown sugar, and vanilla. Not the best sour I’ve had but it’s pretty good all the same. josarah (106), Hinesburg, Vermont, USA

Nice sour cherry taste with a little too much swetness for me. Not a bad sour just not my favorite. matt7215 (967), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 9, 2008 Bottle, Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour, brown/garnet pour head fades in a few minutes, minimal lacing. Smells like cranberry concentrate, ripe pear, sorghum, muscadine grapes. Taste is sweet muscadine, sour cherry, band-aids. Doesn’t hold a candle to the Dutchess or Rodenbach, glad I tried it though. robinvboyer (1429), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 8, 2008 12oz bottle label is Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale. Aroma is sour red wine, and red wine vinegar, very sour, and pungent, but there is a lingering cherry finish. Flavour is tart, but not too tart, a welcoming sourness, with a nice fruity cherry kick. Not too bad, i’m not big on the style, but this isnt half bad. KnN (723), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2008 Nice sour beer. Pours a clear brown with a hint of red. Aroma is dark fruit and cherries with a nice twang on the nose.
Flavor is nice and sour, but there’s a really interesting undercurrent of something sweet. The two play well together. this one goes down easy and has a nice refreshing taste. That sour twang is great. Brewsmith (136), Torrance, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 6, 2008 From an 11.2 oz bottle purchased locally as Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale. Aroma is a little like red wine vinegar, but a little sweeter and with more fruit. Appearance is a clear deep burnt reddish orange with a small light tan head. Flavor is fruity and a little sour, very dry. Sour cherries and plums, almost like when you eat fruit a little before it’s ripe. Dry, sparkling and cleans the palate. Has some body, but not heavy. Sour, but balanced.
