Commercial Description:
Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

dark clear ruby color, sparse head fell quickly but a nice wisp remained. balance is apparent in the aroma, actually a bit on the sweet and faint side altogether. nice quick pucker up front, but after the initial shock there isn’t a ton of character. yes it’s sour and has some pie cherry depth to it, but the flavors get pushed through quickly before they can make a strong impact. perhaps a session sour. like if i was going to do a kegstand with a sour, this would be it.

Bottle: Clear amber w/ a beige head. Has a vinegar-like aroma. Sour yet sweet flavor. The sweet is almost apple-like, very sugary, balanced out w/ the sour. Very tasty.

Draft at Brouwers Cafe Sourfest. Pours a deep and grainy dark brown with a lovely, thick, moussy, creamy tan head. Big brown bread and vinegar nose. Body is just light, still, watery, and the mid-palate is essentially malt vinegar and a bit of sugar. Not much happening here.

Interesting garnet color, moderate light tan head. Aroma of cherries, brown bread, metal, oatmeal and acetone. Flavor is initially tart, but this quickly recedes. You are left with a very bready maltiness and some molasses notes, also short-lived. Slightly metallic aftertaste. Pretty good.

Nice amber/brown pour. Smells a bit off...some metalic aroma with some fruity smells. The taste is sour, but also a bit salty...hmmmm. Creamy feeling, but dry. Not my favorite sour beer.

Really strange beer, but I suppose pretty typical of sour ales. The smell was kind of off-putting. Too sour/medicinal for my tastes. Very nice looking, slightly red. Taste left something to be decided. I like sour ales, but it needed slightly more to really distinguish it. Sour, slightly fruity and decent flavor. Great mouthfeel and for whatever reason I liked it in spite of itself.

4-5-08 bottle shared at tasting thanks to Humulone_Red
Medium rich dark brown pour with a thin ivory head. Smell is thin and subtle tart cherries or grapes. Flavor is sour but too watery. Drinkable but not much character to it.

Bottle. Thanks ChristianScheffel. Pours amber/red with a creamy lasting head & lacings. Aroma is vinous, cherry, oak, caramel. Sour funky fresh & vinous taste. Good mouthfeel & nice brew!
