Commercial Description:
Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

Bottle. Dark ruby body with low carbonation and a thin off-white head. Well balanced sour/fruity aroma with hoppy notes. Nice sour cherry taste that carries notes of plum and tart cherries and leaves a decent aftertaste

Pours a dingy, dishwater brown w/ a spritzy-spattered froth that reduces quickly. Residual lacing is partial. Aroma of soured fruit indeed. Light to medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. Sour upfront w/ a crispness. Not sweet at all. Theres a defined cocoa charcter that shows up and dies just as quick. Wild green apples, kiwi, pineapple w/o the sugar. The finish is bittered w/ an acidic component.

11.2 ounce bottle. Labeled as Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale. Pucker up, because this ale has some strong tartness on the initial phase of each sip or drink. This ale poured a nice reddish-brown into a snifter. The head was cream-colored and frothy, leaving behind tiny, intricate patterns of lacing. A lot of carbonation hugged the bottom of the bowl of the glass, giving the effect of an echo of the head. The aroma was almost that of a marinara sauce or a wine reduction sauce—sour and tangy—with a hint of caramelized sugar. The taste is hard for me to place, although strong apple cider, maraschino cherries (although not as cloying), and lemon (although with a reduced citrus flavor) all come to mind. It was light and airy, with great carbonation, and a ticklish mouthfeel. The flavor moves from intense sour to a sweet finish rather quickly, although the transition is far from disjointed. Pleasurable.

Taste is pleasantly sour with hints of apples, cherries and berries. Nicely done and quite thirst quenching.

Tap at the Happy Gnome as Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour. Dark, ruby red color with a very tall head. Powerful sweet and sour aroma with a blast of cherries. Heavy hitting sour cherries up front in the taste, but then it descends into an almost pale lager-esque graininess. Moderate sweet malt. Definitely some woodiness. After drinking more and more of the glass, it turns into something akin to a red Sweet Tart.

Bottle. Poured a dark red body with big head. Aroma is slightly sour with a fruit/berry scent and small amount of horseblanket. Taste had a small sourness with a berry taste and was pretty weak actually. Decent but not good by any means.
