bitbucket (1473), Kirkland, Washington, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bottled as Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale. Pours cloudy brown with a thin beige head. A little bit of sour cherry in the aroma, but mostly vinegar. Medium body and carbonation. The taste is initially dominated by vinegar, but the more I taste it, the more the vinegar perception fades. Some cherries, earth and fruit in the taste. Sweet-tart finish.
machfive55 (32), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 16, 2008 The beer poured a very deep brown/red color with a nice head that did not last all that long. There was a lively carbonation. The aroma was complex with chocolate and raisin notes. The flavor was a nice mild sourness that is refreshing with hints of citrus and cherries. This is a nice beer that is refreshing as the label notes and is very easy drinking. I think the complexity of the beer makes it more like a cocktail than a beer, there is just a lot going on with this beer. mansquito (568), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Jul 13, 2008 Bright beige head, which leaves lacing. Dark reddish color. Aroma is sour fruit. Lots of fruit. Berries methinks. Tart cherries in the flavor. It is pretty sour. Dry finish. Quite interesting. JonR888710 (1000), Cochabamba, Bolivia Jul 10, 2008 *****BEER # 1,000*****. Sampled from 11.2 oz bottle at the Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA. Brown-purple body with a large, frothy tan head, pocked bubbles. Smells Worcestershire, cranberries, apple vinegar -- very savory. Taste is full, flush, bursting with cranberry and sweet, acidic vinegar. Very fresh and balanced. Ending is copper pennies though, spicy ginger. Lacing is quite nice, khaki bubbles slung on the walls of my wine glass. Corn malt. Construction gets high points. Aromas of funk and cherries fill my nose
Flavors of sour and tart fruit a great treat lots of pucker power
Medium mouthfeel with enough carbonation to keep it interesting
I’ve had this on tap and I will say that it was better than the bottle, but still a good sour none the less
ogglethorp (750), Ohio, USA Jul 8, 2008 On tap at Monks. Pours brown with some red highlights, with a small thin off white head. Nose of vinegar, light cherry notes, malt, yeast. Flavor is tart cherries, yeast, vineous. Palate is medium to light bodied, mild carbonation, finished silky smooth! Very refreshing, great brew!
