doubleo (720), San Diego, California, USA Apr 22, 2008 Bottle of Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Red Ale. Pours brown red with a thin, light brown head, some retention, some lace. Smells sour and acidic with some red fruity sweetness as well. Taste is a nice mix of sourness up front, and then sweet fruitinesson the finish. A little bit of funkiness in there as well. Medium body, good carbonation
f351c4v (207), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 20, 2008 Monk’s Cafe bottle, has been around the collection for a while... Pours a dark, muddy brown with a small, tan head. Big, sweet-tart nose, a little earthy. As expected, sour with some balancing sweetness. Acidic finish, refreshing. Just not all that complex... DA (2376), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours dark red/brown with a tall tan head. Very rich nose of cherry, chocolate, and earthy funkiness. Big woody sour character with a vinegar and acidic finish. A touch sweeter then most, I still thought this turned out nice. AgentSteve (736), Livermore, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 Recommended by Ed at Ledger’s, pours deep scarlet brown with a small, fizzy, cream colored head. The nose is tart funk and cherries with a touch of wood. The flavor goes a bit more woody, but cherries are defiitely present along with a decent helping of acidity. Lively on the palate with a slight oak finish. Great sour for the $2.99 price. Bungalo22 (257), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA Aug 15, 2008 Bought a single bottle labeled Monk’s Cafe. Pours a dark ruby color with a nice head. It smells a bit like sulfer (I guess lactic) at first but as you settle in with it it gets a slight bit like really rip fruit. Head stays in place at a decent level as you sip with some nice lacing. Tastes at first like a sweet vinegar. It is really, really refreshing but it kills your palate after a bit. It is nice and tart as a sour should be but perhaps not tart enough. I would have also liked to pull out the dark fruit flavors easier. NomDeBeer (129), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 15, 2008 Clear red color with a nice head. Aroma wet wood and sweet fruit. Flavor is sticky with sugar and vinegar. Slight metallic bite in the finish. Little to no funk in the taste or aroma. Certainly not the best sour ale, but I enjoyed it.
