Aroma is mainly caramel and fruits with some white wine as well. Pretty good taste with a nice kick of alcohol. Mouthfeel has a good burning sensation but lacks creaminess for my taste. Overall very good. A nice find. RateandPillage (417), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 26, 2005 Pours copper brown in color with small tan head. Lots of caramel and fruit in the aroma. Big malty body and flavor. Pretty good for an Italian beer. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 12, 2005 Deep bronze in color, minimal head that forms a ring around the perimeter. Thought this was supposed to be a doppelbock, but seeing it filed as a bock on RateBeer is more appropriate. Tangy, caramel malt smell, apples and maple, and a small spicy edge. Taste has a prominent burnt tobacco edge, rich caramel malts and some brown sugar accents. Small hints of apples, pepper and allspice on the backend. Slightly nutty. Much heavier on the palate than appearance suggests - somewhat blankets the palate and coats it like wax. Strong malts presence contributes to the heavily sweetened persona of this beer. Chewy at times. Tobacco presence is unshakable. Finish is like sipping cognac. Nut shell aftertaste; slick but still waxy. Something about this beer reminds me of sitting by a campfire. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 3, 2005 Bottle. Reddish brown colour that was immediately inviting and enticing, with a good thick creamy brown head. Spicy nose of cinnamon and mocha, almost like a stout. Very solid body and a very individual (hard to describe, though pleasing) finish. Big on alcohol at 7.2%, but it wasn’t really noticeable on the palate. Probably go great with some Italian food. Want something different ? Try this. Didn’t know the Italians could make a beer this good. thegreenrooster (1842), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 1, 2005 Pour is a dark brown with a small white head. Aroma is of molasses with some dark fruits in there. Flavor is a sweet dark fruit, like a plum or date. Alcohol is very present as you swallow. Its ok for the style but the alcohol overpowers so much at the end its hard to put this one over the top. IPFreely (1470), Lewiston, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 1, 2005 Deep amber ruby color, tan head. Quite malty, pretty fruity, without going overboard in any direction. Medium full body. Quite tasty, a pretty nice find. wunderbier (1271), Tampere, Finland
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 26, 2005 12 oz bottle, snifter. I couldn’t rouse much of a head from the pour. Not something I’m particularly attached to in this style. Deep maroon hue. Aroma is strong of plum and red-grape juice. Caramel, grains. Light alcohol. Moderately sweet, moderately acidic flavor becomes a lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter flavor. Medium-full body, watery/creamy texture, average carbonation, light alcohol. The bottom line is: glad this isn’t classified as a doppelbock as it falls well short of that mark. My real knock on this beer is the acidity...it’s just out of place. That and there’s not a lot of depth here. Meh.
