Commercial Description:
Ambershock® is an amber beer produced by way of infusion, with 7.0% alcohol by volume (17.7 Plato degrees). The wort boiling phase is prolonged in this case to obtain a certain caramelizing of the sugars in the wort. Strong, full-bodied and mellow, its marked yet well-balanced malt flavor mainly derives from a special bottle-conditioning process that lasts for approximately 4 weeks. Bear in mind that this is not a refermentation phase caused by adjunct sugar or wort, which happens with Trappist beers. It is an exclusive procedure adopted by Birrificio Italiano® of Lurago Marinone. That is why Ambershock® is only sold in bottles. If it were matured in vats and served on tap, it would have a completely different taste. Bottle conditioning also brings about perfect settling of the yeast, which makes it possible to have a perfectly limpid beer with a strong, bright amber color.

Great dark amber color and decent off-white head. Very refreshing beer, deserves better than a 73% overall.

Bottle. Red brown with a small head. Aromas are yeasty with berries. Quite earthy. Flavours are sweet soft berries with some woodiness. Green, hoppy bitterness. Yeasty, fruity and dry.

Bottle. Dark orangey brown beer with a deeply malty and mildy dry aroma. The flavour is rich and mildly sour with a dry finish. Overall a nice’ish beer.

Courtesy of Bo from Aakjærs in Esbjerg who gave me this a few days before the BB, and I had it a few days after. It is hazy, orange-brown with a creamy head. The aroma is sour with notes of malt, yeast and citrus. The flavour is slightly sour, tart, no sweetness, notes of malt, yeast, citrus and light fruit. It is either very far from what a bock normally is, or else it is infected, and I’m pretty sure it is.

Bottle that I picked up at Esbjerg Bottle shop, Denmark, Sept 2008. Pours amber as the name suggests but with a tiny bit of orange hazyness with good white head. Slight sour yeastyness, quite fruity, bit sweet, its ok but nothing great. A6 A3 F7 P3 OV14

My Bottom Line:
Fruity caramel and herbal hops dwell alongside doughy yeast in this balanced, drinkable and crafty Dunkler Bock.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam recedes into the copper gown.
-There is no sign of alcohol in the flavor profile.
-The fruitiness is quite complex and could emulate cherries and bananas at times.
-A light wooden hop bitterness follows the toasted and caramel malts.
-The body is rich and satisfying, yet remains quite drinkable.

From the bottle at the brewery restaurant. Thx Giulio!
