restless7 (102), Lenexa, Kansas, USA May 10, 2008 BOTTLE: Amora is lemony, wheat and citrus. Flavor is too fruity, too much lemon and a short finish. Just really not impressed with this one.
Quack-Duck (1829), Bodensee, Germany Oct 3, 2008 bottle, Danke Kölschtrinker! Cloudy pale yellow colour, large white head. Yeasty and malty, very slightly fruity with some resiny hops and hints of herbs. MiP (6018), Flensburg, Germany Sep 21, 2008 Bottle, 5.2%. Wheaty aroma, hint of clove and phenols. Cloudy yellow colour. Nice big stable white head. The flavour starts off OK wheaty and spicy, but soon turns rough and thin. Slightly rough bitterness in the finish. otakuden (117), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 14, 2008 Bischoff Ur-weisse pours a thick cloudy orange with a thick head which wastes no time in rising to the top of my glass. After it fades, a thin ring of foam lingers around the edge. A slow string of bubbles gradually rise to the top, releasing faint esters of orange rind, citrus, and bananas. While not as intense as other German hefes in the bananas and cloves, the mix of orange and citrus with spices makes for a pleasantly gentle combination. I detect a bit of cinnamon in the spiced flavor intensity, while the overall body is light yet mouth coating and viscous. I am left with a pleasant smoothness on my tongue and mouth from Bischoff that doesn’t cloy or interfere with my ongoing enjoyment of the beer. I get more of the bananas in the aftertaste which Bischoff leaves while the spices and citrus are more in the frontal sensory assault. As she warms, even more ripe bananas come into play, maybe a hint of pear, while finishing with a very mellow balanced palate.
None of the major flavor intensity which I usually attribute to a German Hefe dominates the palate of Bischoff Ur-weisse like they do in other hefes. Overall, a rather subdued weizen from Bischoff. goldbrew (99), USA Aug 21, 2008 I was expecting very little but the taste surpassed my preconceptions. Well-executed clove and banana on the palate, no hint of metallic or distasteful finish, and a decent aroma. Optigon (557), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 2, 2008 Pours cloudy, yellow-orange with a fine, white head. Aroma is citrus, spicy, with a bit of banana. Flavor is primarily citrus, malt, space, and banana in quality. Thinner mouth feel than what I like, but not bad.
