Commercial Description:
Our Bison 2005 Barleywine Ale is in the traditional English style. Its original gravity was 1.092 using 4 organic malts. We enjoy hints of toffee in it balance of rich malty flavor and good bitterness.

From a 22 oz bottle this poured a rich copper color with a light tan head. Big nose of caramel malts and fruit hops. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor tends toward the sweet with a light bitter finish. Quite decent barley wine.

Thanks to Redlight for the taste. Pours a clear amber with a sweet smell. Taste is of dried fruits with a bitter finish. Overall, not a great barleywine.

The aroma is sweet and metallic with alcohol, citrus hops, and caramel. The appearance is amber with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma but also has a slight cardboard taste. The palate is smooth but thin. Overall its a disappointment.

Courtesy Redlight. Pours a dark caramel color with little head. Pungent sweet caramel malt aroma with a thick earthy hops. Smooth malt body, noticeable alcohol and more bitter earthy hops. Very smooth barley wine with a nice balancing bitterness thats not too over the top. Decent BW.

I want to like this beer, but it looks like disappointment is imminent. Pours flat and cloudy dark red-amber. No head. Aroma is good, though. Nice and fruity, lots of apple juice. Just a tad smokey. Not much hops. Flavor is a bit lacking. Sweet and fruity with some grassy hops. But there is just not much going on here. It needs some kick. Palate is flat and mildly astringent. This is drinkable, there’s no doubt about that. A bit too drinkable.

Pours white with a dissipating head. Aromas of sweet malt and earthy hops. Flavor is very sweet, actually a bit cloying. Once you get past the sweetness there is a big complex malt flavor with some earthy hops to balance. Not bad. Need some real heavy food to stand up to this beer... good thing I’m just about to pull some spares out of the smoker.

Pours amber with chunks and virtually no head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Mouthfeel is watery for a barleywine with slight carbonation. Taste is sweet and malty I guess I can get the toffee. Good but not great for a BW (give me some old numbskull) very drinkable though.
