Rastacouere (5270), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jul 28, 2005 Deep dakr brown. Nice beige ring. Big nose of tobacco, oat, light alcohol and heavy chocolate. Well balanced in mouth, the oats and chocolate are rich and velvety while the cereals and blackberries add the necessary depth. Perfect bitterness level to my palate. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Textbook well brewed impy. CaptainCougar (4633), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jul 6, 2005 Sampled 1/17/2004: Pours a rich very dark brown with a light tan head. Lightly hoppy and dark roasted malt aroma. Starts with a candy-like malt presence with good complexity and a hoppy roasted chocolatey finish, dripping with bourbon oak. A great stout and the best beer I’ve had from Texas. hopscotch (4460), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 11, 2005 Growler, I think... RBSG 2005... This beer rocks!... Black ale with a mid-sized, deep beige head. Good retention. Rich, roasted, dark chocolate nose. Notes of light molasses and vanilla. Malty, dark chocolate flavor. Black cherries and espresso. A touch on the sweet side, but decently balanced considering all the malt. Full-bodied and oily with medium carbonation. Lengthy, chocolatey, lightly bitter finish. Excellent brew! muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jul 18, 2005 Sampled from growler at RBSG courtesy of Walt. Thick, tarry black in the center with some light showing through at the edge, bit of tan head mostly lasting...lots of licorice in the nose, bit of chocolate (cocoa powder really) and vanilla in the nose...very light chocolate again in the body and some strange citrusy acid that rather underwhelms the whole experience despite the nice hints of smokiness towards the end...reasonable fullness of texture keeps this from being a wash, and in fact its quite decent...just not the masterpiece I’d wanted. acrdz (4285), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jul 13, 2005 Updated: Jul 20, 2005Growler at the RBSG thanks to Walt. Up against it’s whiskey cousin I think it comes up short, but up against some of the other imperial stouts available at the gathering, it was money. Doesn’t do anything fancy, just performs well as a base imperial stout, which makes me like the whiskey barrel version even more. Deep black body, moderately thick texture sticking to the glass. Rich slightly smoky, woody scent, with some sweetness and a little yeast or hop scent. Texture is decently thick, with some slightly sweet flavors up front of more woody chocolate malts and smoke, and a touch of something sweeter like fruit or perhaps that’s the yeast. A great no-nonsense IS.
