aceofhearts (1373), San Francisco, California, USA Dec 31, 2005 Tap. This, my friends, was the last beer that I will ever drink from Bitter End, may she rest in peace. As of tonight, the most awesome brewpub that I have ever been to is no more. There were only two beers on tap there on December 31st, 2005: the ’04 barleywine and this fine effort. Opaque black, small tan head, and mighty fine looking in the snifter glass that qualifies as "proper glassware" in Texas. The aroma comes strong with some bourbon, hazlenut, and chocolate. Warming alcohol presence in the body and flavor, with chocolate being the strongest of the flavors present. Very thick mouthfeel with a sweet and slightly milky finish...or was it a milky property in the flavor? Dark and mysterious. What a finish for BE’s great run as the best brewpub in Texas. hopscotch (4485), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 11, 2005 Growler, I think... RBSG 2005... This beer rocks!... Black ale with a mid-sized, deep beige head. Good retention. Rich, roasted, dark chocolate nose. Notes of light molasses and vanilla. Malty, dark chocolate flavor. Black cherries and espresso. A touch on the sweet side, but decently balanced considering all the malt. Full-bodied and oily with medium carbonation. Lengthy, chocolatey, lightly bitter finish. Excellent brew! Walt (2268), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 6, 2005 Pour is black with a light tan head...smell is quite roasty with cocoa, vanilla, alcohol, and coffee...taste is first bittersweet chocolate followed rapidly by lots of bitter coffee...mildly sweet alcohol finish pushing the bitter aside...medium bodied but it could be a little thicker...still a great mouthfeel though... DewBrewer (248), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 15, 2005 On draught. Light brown head over a black beer. Oooh, roasty aroma. The chocolate and roast are very intense in the flavor. It’s amazing how the flavors work through your palate as it goes down, then through the aftertaste. It’s like more beer than one in a single swallow. Excellent. CaptainCougar (4637), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jul 6, 2005 Sampled 1/17/2004: Pours a rich very dark brown with a light tan head. Lightly hoppy and dark roasted malt aroma. Starts with a candy-like malt presence with good complexity and a hoppy roasted chocolatey finish, dripping with bourbon oak. A great stout and the best beer I’ve had from Texas.
