Commercial Description:
A prime example of the hard to find German style dark lager known as "schwarzbier". This lager has all the color and character of a dark ale without the associated burnt bitterness. A cool fermentation temperature and 8 weeks of aging provide exceptional smoothness.

Wow. My first scharzbier. Didn’t know what to expect. Super dark. Looks like tall glass of coke. Really deep flavor, but not heavy in the least. Finishes smooth, and leaves you trying to figure out what flavors are happening. Amazing.

Out of the tap the beer is black with a nice sized tannish head of medium sized creamy bubbles. The flavor is of malt and slightly caramel . Overall a nice beer but isn’t my favorite.

Decent sized dense off white head of creamy bubbles. Does not last real long though. Nice roasty aroma with a bit of bread, vanilla and a decent bitterness. Color is a dark ruby brown. Quite the impressive color. Flavor is malty but a little thin. Lots of roasted grains, some crusty bread and some nutty characters. Again, decent bitterness which lingers after the swallow. Little bit acidic on the palate. Finish is roasty and somewhat creamy. A decent schwarzbier.

On tap at the brewpub with illinismitty. Pours a nice deep dark brown almost black, moslty clear and a thin lasting off white head. Aroma is classic- schwarzbier character- nutty roasted dark mlats, some chocolate and some nice toffee caramel aromas with some light herbal hops. Flavor is more nutty burnt malts, dry acrid roasted malts, light caramel sweetness, and finishes fairly dry with a light easy to drink body. Finishes dry and a bit tart. Fairly clean, but lacks a distinct smoothness and richness that you get from a real german schwarz. Pretty good.

Draft shared with Dickensonbeer. Pours a rich deep murky brown black. Lager and dark roasted malt aroma. Flavor of brown sugar, caramel, and mild roast coffee. Very smooth and clean finish. I am not an expert on this style, but this was enjoyable and easy to drink.

6.25.05 Garden State Brewfest. Looks like this will be my 666th rating so I think it is fitting to have it be the Black Magic Schwarzbier. One of my more favorite styles, this was by far the best offering from Bitting’s on that hot summer day next to The Big J on the Delaware.

At NJ Craft Brew Fest 2005: Probably the best beer they had that day. Nice notes of coffee and sweetness in it palate. A solid beer that stands apart from their others.
