Sharply citric, even a little acidic. Big grapefruit explodes throughout. Lesser notes of pine, spruce and resinous tree sap. Malts were mild, but definitely in the profile. Notes of bread dough and a very slight amount of caramel sweetness. Significant amount of bitterness in the finish. Kind of dry finish. Not too shabby, but the grapefruit was a little too dominant. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 13, 2004 This was a highlight of the Real ale fest... One of the better IPA on cask that day.. pours amber in color with aromas of pine and citrus. The flavor is more of the same but goes down smooth.... very smooth.. I think I may have to BJs and try some of their other brews. unclebleen (620), California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 12, 2004 Pours a orange color with a small off-white head. Aroma is quite hoppy, piney and grapefruit citrus. Flavor is very, very hoppy. This one is almost grapefruit juice...and I like it! Body is medium. This is a pretty good IPA. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2004 Draft at BJ’s in Boulder. Poured orange with a medium white head. Big hop aroma with pine and citrus notes. Massive hop flavor with a big bitter hop finish. Lots of hop belches after this one. Little malty sweetness and a bit of grapefruit. A nice beer but seems a little one dimensional to me. GEOBRAU (182), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 5, 2004 Tap: Everything I expect in a IPA. The aroma was so intense it fused with the flavor, filling my sinus cavities with the three c’s. Judicious malt kept it all in check. A hop-head’s dream. carboloader (319), Houston, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 23, 2003 Server called it the "mega" IPA, so I am guessing that this is the backdraft IPA, but could be wrong. Pours a dark amber with nice beige head. Flavor is incredibly hoppy -- of the pine and citrus variety. Well balanced with a nice bitter finish. Almost ties my all-time favorites, but it's not quite as over-the-top as Avery or MacTarnahan's. A very good IPA and in my opinion the best on-site brew in Houston (not that there are many to choose from).
