Pours black, with tan head. Smell is really strong and charred, roasty ashy dark malt. Taste is similar with very dark, borderline burnt roasty malt and an ashy finish. Carbonation is too high and prickly however. Softens as it warms, and the flavor is pretty nice, but no oatmeal creamy smoothness. Overall, definitely one of the better if not best BJs beers I’ve had.

Jul 12, 2008 Tap at Cincy location. Pours dark brown with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is roasted malt with a sweetness from the oatmeal and a hint of chocolate. The flavor is drier than the nose may suggest. Pretty average roasted malt, oatmeal,and a touch of chocolate. Medium bodied, nothing is really jumping out at me with this one.

Pours a deep black with an off-ivory head. Nose is chocolate coffee with a touch of roasted nut. Flavor is dry chocolate powder with a coffee-barley wine finish. Average mouthfeel. Pretty good.

May 18, 2008 black pour with a creamy tan head. sweet malts on the nose with a tiny bit of coffee. not a bad mouthfeel actually. quite creamy and sweet. not a bad brew from these guys.

Dark brown with a tan head that fades quickly but leaves a nice speckled lacing behind. Big roasted malt and coffee smell with some pecans in there too. Flavor is watery malt with a slight roasty finish. Super high and unfitting carbonation - almost soda like. Very thin and has an underplayed flavor. Pepsi flavor and palate appear as it warms a little. The smell was so nice I was imagining the taste to be as bold as the smell. But overall, very drinkable and one of the better ones at BJs.
