| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 5, 2009 On tap at Black Forest Brew Haus. Pours a dark brown with a thin-moderate light brown head that lasted through the first two sips and left no lace. This is one of those cases where I wish there were half-point gradients in our scale, because both the aroma and the flavor were both better than 7 in my opinion, but not quite what I think of in an 8. To compromise, I gave the aroma the seven and flavor the 8. The aroma is mildly smokey along with chocolate and malt. The flavor is again mild wood smoke along with some lightly roasted malt and chocolate. A tad sweet. Light bitterness at the finish. Very easy to drink and enjoyable. thenick (744), North Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 11, 2009 Tap @ Black Forest. Pours a deep reddish-brown with a tan head. Aroma is sweet, with malt and chocolate detectable. Flavor is sweet up front dissolving into yeast and spice on the end. It was a bit watery for my taste overall, but I still enjoyed it. tgncc (818), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jul 13, 2008 Sweet aroma, malty, with alcohol noted. Slight chocolate aroma as well. Dark brown appearance, with ruby red tinge. Flavor is sweet, chocolatey, malty. Sufficiently thick mouthfeel. The finish is sweet, no hop bite, slight alcohol. Enjoyable. I got this is a growler, which I’ve come to realize is not the best way to enjoy beer. Chapel (330), Levittown, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Dec 15, 2007 Pours dark black. Aroma and flavor of mocha chocolate with some bitterness to finish. Strong bock character that one would expect from something labeled ’doppelbock’ with the alcohol warming to match. Like most things at Black Forest, it was served much too cold. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2007 Draft @ HDG. Color is brown with some red around the edges. Aroma is chocolate malts without much smokiness at all. Flavor takes on caramel notes before the roastiness. Happy to say this beer evolved beautifully in the barrel from start to finish. A really nice treat from Big Joe Hayes! goldtwins (4080), Nesconset, New York, USA
