On this the eve of my 1500th rating I am pleased to bask in the gleam of your aluminum carriage. Having sequestered you away from your harness team of six, I now set you free. Informed by the online sites of beer appraisal that your home is in Montreal, I find that your banner declares that thou art "Brewed Only In Newfoundland", and I am perplexed by this new revelation. Like your polar bear cousin, the two largest producers of our land have exiled you to the far reaches of our Northern Range. The large fluffy white peaks atop your pale yellow contents evoke images of the tall mountain crests behind your image; a stark contrast to your dark visage. The emerging aroma has sweet, grainy, and floral qualities, unlike the rocky barren of your artist rendered home. The flavour of your namesake is admittedly much better than that of the liquids you yourself can generate. Sweet flavour has echoes of the sweet grains and floral nature of the aroma, giving way to bitterness and less pleasant notes as if departs. The smooth touch across the palate is not unlike the waves of your mane in the breeze. An inoffensive but it is lacking the statuesque grandeur of your portrait.
Lord Ronald said nothing; he flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions.
myke (3), toronto, Ontario, Canada does not count | 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 5/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | Aug 13, 2005 not bad. don’t really remember it; i remember liking it on tap alot. i also remember i didn’t throw it away or dispose of it, so it had to be good. So I grabbed this Newfoundland-only product here in the Newfoundland city of Corner Brook and gave it a try.
Pours a straw gold with a wee tinge o’ orange to it. Foams like crazy (watch that aggressive end to the pour, can’t be too fancy here). The head was nice and dissapated slowly enough to warrant good marks there. There was even a good lily pad of cover throughout the whole session. The carbonation plows upward beautifully, but maybe a bit too much.
Smells of hops only a bit, with a hint of celery. Nothing else to it. Not bad smelling, just not much to smell.
The mouthfeel is nearly crisp. Nearly because it has a modest soapy feel. The carbonation is average.
The taste is slightly coconut. For me, this instantly triggered a memory of Red Stripe (there is a historical connection between Jamaica and Newfoundland.....). Unfortunately, there was also an adjunct flavour that was slightly off-putting. Bitter finish with a sour aftertaste that builds into a bad medicinal pile on the back of your tongue.
Basically, the Horse is reminiscent of any member of the Molson family, but is a notch higher on the scale. Just as I would likely choose Red Stripe over Canadian, I would choose this over any other Molson product. Not bad for a macro. Just not an everyday beer for me. Now a lager, with much of the bitterness and body stripped away. Just a mainstream Canadian brew. Oakes (8172), Beyond the Great Firewall, China

Golden colour. Light, but slightly malty, grainy aroma. Slightly petrol-like notes in the palate, with vague leafy notes. A little thicker than your average macro but still a macro. I really wanted to like it, but like cod lips, seal flippers and other Newfoundland delicacies I really couldn’t get into it that much. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

I get strong adjunct and very modest malt or hop flavors. If you have to drink this stuff, serve it ice cold -the flavors that are there can safely be missed. Better yet, party like the Newfies and drink rum.
