Slacks (481), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Sep 4, 2009 Cask @ Brewery Grand Opening: Poured pitch black, awesome tan head. Aroma is whisky-soaked cherries, espresso, dark chocolate and plenty of that oak barrel. Flavour is quite boozy, dark chocolate, espresso, and lots of cherry. It seems somehow simultaneously a little thin but seems to coat the tongue. I still love it purely for what it is.. haha. Spab (236), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 20, 2009 Cask at C’est What Spring Festival. Pours a slightly reddish very dark brown with small mocha head. Strong roasty aroma with chocolate, cherry and slight oaky notes. Cherries and oakiness more prominent in the roasty flavour. Somewhat bitter, alcoholy finish. Interesting and enjoyable. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 11, 2009 [2095-20090418] Cask. Roasty malt and mild fruit aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting bubbly light tan head. Mild buttery toast flavour with lots of oak and roast and tree twigs and a mild aftertaste of sap. Medium body is a little thin. Could stand more body, otherwise good.
(@ Black Oak Brewery; Etobicoke, ON) garthicus (1216), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 25, 2009 Cask at the Black Oak brewery. Appearance: Jet black with a teeny tiny tan head. Aroma: Lots of wood, strawberries, banana skin, cherry, vanilla, chocolate with a tiny amount of alcohol. Flavour: Banana skin, whiskey is very evident, cherry, chocolate, pretty alcoholic, seems quite ’young’, I enjoyed getting to sample it at the source. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada May 19, 2009 Cask. At Black Oak Brewery "picnic", April 2009. Thin-looking black pour, with a small frothy beige head. Dry and moderately sour oak resin aroma, sour cherries and boozy sweetness. The taste hadn’t quite gelled yet, all over the place - light chocolate, discreet sour cherry (mild), quite a lot of dry oak tannin bitterness - seemed dusty and almost musty, like it was an old oak cask; not bad, just scattered. Thin, slick, fairly acid/astringent mouthfeel, quite lacking in carbonation. With age, this might mellow and balance out into something quite good, but when I had it, more of a curiosity. Could use more malt body, too, but that’s just me - I like my stouts t’ick. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 30, 2009 Cask at the Black Oak brewery. Pours black with a spare bubbly tan head. Slightly sweet aroma of roasted malt, vanilla and chocolate. Flavour: Hmmm, I think this is a little young, watery too. Roasty along with wood, cherries and some light hops in the finish. Average bodied. An interesting attempt but not as good as the non-barrel aged version. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 21, 2009 Updated: May 4, 20092009-04-18. Pitch black body with a small brown head. and brown touches on the edges in the light. Whisky in the aroma up front, sweet malt and muted cherries. (6+) Flavour also shows the barrel prominently with light woody touches and a simple alcohol/whiskey melange that melds with the cherry in an interesting way at times. Sweet malt has a dilute roast character to it. Whisky and cherry notes vary between rather nice and a bit off putting depending. (I am not a huge fan of either normally so that could just be me). (6+) Average palate borders on thin, low carbonation in the case. A successful experiment even if its not my personal favourite - I think I prefer the straight up version. Cask at the brewery
