Sweetened apple-like flavors but full body throughout. It’s like a version of Bass made by an artisan. Very sweet and fruity finish. An interesting beer. Too bad it can’t be a little higher in the alcohol category. AAO (102), Næstved, Denmark

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jan 3, 2005 Large frothy white head. Ruduces to a thin sponge looking substance. Lasts for a while. Decent lacing. Aroma of dog biscuits, dusty malts and some hops. Color is a medium amber. Flavor tastes like dry dog food. More malts and a bit of sweetness. A little bitterness. Not much for an ESB. Finish is smooth and slightly dry. Ok but there are much better. Cdog (32), Farmington, Michigan, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 30, 2004 I was looking forward to A great British ale and was a little disappointed. This beer came up a little short on malt and hops. This is not a bad tasting ale, it was just missing a little zing. I wanted this beer to dance across my tongue, and it just sort of laid there. asheft (1443), Marburg, Germany
| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 1/5 | 4/20 | Dec 20, 2004 Straw-copper colour; foamy lasting head. Sweet aroma of mostly malt and noble hops, some subtle fruity notes. Flavour unidentifiable beneath a cloying metallic and astringent feel. I’l have to try another bottle in case something went wrong with this bottle/batch. albert007 (412), Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 11, 2004 Decent beer. Slightly cloudy amber color with a nice white head. Hops, malt and grassy aromas (like sileage, for those who know what that is), tasty and satisfying to boot. Pretty fizzy as well and I did notice a mild honeyish taste, but I could have been tripping! BearBrewer (86), New York, east village, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 10, 2004 Im not entirely sure this is the same beer thats been reviewed here. It was bottled as Black Sheep Ale, not special.. but ratebeer says its the same and an alias for special ale. Anyway, I loved it. Poured a somewhat cloudy golden amber, with a huge rocky white head. Some farmhouse aromas, some wheaty, malty grainy aromas with underlying hops. Interesting champagne like carbonation that kept on going. The head lasted forever, lots of lacing. Nice chewy mouthfeel with subtle flavor. Seemed like a solid english bitter, but with slightly more hop character. Could definitely drink a few of these. jerohen (1615), Bussum, Netherlands
