Malty aroma with a touch of Golding hops thrown in. Flavor is crisp, malty (caramel?) with a dry, bitter finish. Not very excited about this beer ... it’s rather plain, if fairly decent. Nowhere near as good as Black Sheep’s Riggwelter, which I had the other night. If you’re going to seek out a Black Sheep ale, go for that one and skip the Special. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

Clear deep gold with a short soapy off-white head that remained for the length. Aroma of oranges and mandarins, toasted malt and yeast. A little watery and soapy in the mouth, lightly carbonated with husky burnt sugars, malt and citrus flavours, quite sweet but becomes bitter in the back, more malt than hops. A little light on, yet still a nice bitter. ThomasE (5178), Copenhagen, Denmark

It tastes like I imagine an English ale of 100 years ago to taste like. A lot better than most Young’s/Fuller’s ales. BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 10, 2004 Musty hoppy nothingness to the aroma. Pedestrian amber colour. There’s a creamy caramel taste to it that lends itself to a good malt/hop balance, but the earthy grass tone means it’s a bit off. Passable but certainly not a top ESB.
