Cask, Gilded Lily, Carlisle. One of those beers that’s everywhere and, therefore, usually passed over in favour of something more exotic. However, The Gilded Lily only has one handpump so that was my choice. You forget how good these ordinary bitters can be. Pleasant amber appearance, exceptionally crystal clear, nice hoppy aroma and a sharp, dry clean taste on the palate. Some brewers could take lessons in how to produce a good session beer like this.

A Mes rate. Gravicask at Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. A vivid dark golden colour with a thin but stable white head and pretty decent condition. Reasonable malt and hop balance in the aroma with some slight spice. In the mouth it’s a pretty tasty beer actually. A straight down the line best with a great balance of bready malt and fruity hops. Something slightly German about it but I’m not sure what. Anyway, decent stuff overall.

Handpulled cask at the Telegraph, Moulton, Northhampton. I have drunk this beer a lot since it first appeared in the early 90s, mostly in North Yorkshire includind the brewery bar. Orange amber with a creamy white head. A well balanced northern bitter with a complex malt profile and plenty of dry english hops. A consistently good session beer.

Great beer this one. Famous from yorkshire and a good tasting session ale. at 3.8% it is surprisingly not that strong and i do prefer beers that are less strong in general. Excellent beer from Black sheep.

A nutty amber ale with a small, wispy head of pure white. Citric hoppy notes in the aroma. Hops again and toasted cereals in the mouth very light and easy. A great session drinker.

Darker orange amber coloured beer with no carbonation and an average creamy oof-white head. Sweet fruity aroma with some light caramel touches. Full creamy palate. Finish is bitter fruity, longer dry ending. A very nice, well balanced bitter

Fairly dark red pint for a bitter, thin creamy white head. Taste is nice balanced bitterness with lots of fruity hops and a touch of malt. Nice bitter finish. Good.
